Six Stoplights 'Til Home or Why I Hate Temple University

Six Stoplights 'Til Home or Why I Hate Temple University

A Poem by Olivia Starnes-Zielinsky
"

When my best friend (at the time) told me he was going to college across the state, I lost it.

"

Gas pedal pushed on my way home.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight.

End of next week ‘n you’ll be gone.

So what am I gonna do after you depart?

Over there with all those new girls to replace me.

It’s bad enough you got " (oh, what’s her name) " your girlfriend clawing at my skin.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight.

How come you’re going so far away?

Jesus, did I do it again;

Working on my biceps pushing walls away.

Maybe I oughta be a construction worker.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight.

Oh, f**k it.

Shoulda never gotten close.

I’ll just ditch him now so it won’t hurt quite so bad next week and the year after.

Yeah, that’s the smart thing to do.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight.

This always happens to me.

I hold an open house and nobody shows.

Then I accept an offer after months of debating and they withdraw seconds before closing the deal.

Faulty wiring, I guess. Maybe I’ll slit my wrists tonight.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight.

What’s with these lights?

This CD is perfect for now.

Angry. Hostile. Sad.

Suicidal.

10. 20. 35. Stoplight

Well, at least this is the last one.

I wonder if I’ll be alive by the end of his freshman year.

Is he gonna call like he says?

Will he remember my face without a picture handy? (Mental note to self: Get framed picture of self for -------.)

Stop sign.

Will I ever, just once, get green lights all the way home?
