Confidence

Confidence

A Poem by Olivia Starnes-Zielinsky

I wanna take my tests in pen.

I envy the kids who can do that.

Confidently look at their paper and begin filling in bubbles

Like it’s just an activity sheet to keep them busy.

I always use a mistake-prone tool

To act as a precaution against my weaknesses.

Can’t remember the last time I thought permanently and without fear.

It scares me " this lack of assurance.

Maybe one day I’ll get the guts to use an ink brush

On my text.

But I fear my hand will just reach for the whiteout.

This reminds me of the day at school when you're finally allowed to write in pen rather than pencil. I can still remember the big box of fat, blue pens my teacher kept for just that occasion.
I do like the way in which you've linked the confidence of writing with confidence in life. There's real insecurity in the phrase, "can't remember the last time I thought permanently". It gives the impression that even something as fleeting and ephemeral as a thought is something that the narrator fears will be judged or held to be weak.
I am a little puzzled when you write "I always use a mistake-prone tool" though, do you actually mean "mistake-proof" at that point (i.e. something that can be easily corrected when mistakes occur)?
There's interesting use of graphology at the end with the floating final sentence (hopefully it's not a browser problem I'm seeing). It gives the impression that everything was going well with the poem but finally the inevitable mistake creeps in, and bang goes confidence once more!
