Apples

Apples

A Poem by Olivia Starnes-Zielinsky
"

This was written back in college about a girl who seemed to get everything right.

"

I see her and begin to peel.

Layer by layer, shedding the blood-soaked paper strips

As I walk to class with my head down around my ankles.

She’s so obnoxious in that pretty-in-pink-perfection kind of way.

Always the cute one. The pretty one. Teacher’s pet.

Her perpetual spunk would piss off Oprah, not to mention Lou Grant.

Irregularities and rancor nihilism are beyond her grasp "

It’s all uphill from here.

I bet when you peel her, the skin comes off in one long, lengthy strip.

Well I don't know how dark it was intended to be, but it sent shivers down my spine.
