ProcrastinationA Poem by E.M.OglesbeeI have time The teacher writes on the board Our scribbling mirrors her movements A new assignment, due tomorrow The order has been given I have time School ends, we are all relieved Everyone runs home and starts their work but not me, I'll eat something first What does it matter? I have all evening I have time My favorite show comes on Two hours of Scrubs, I can't pass this up My book bag sits in the corner, unopened It's not a big deal, I have all night I have time 3:00 a.m. I snap awake I forgot to do the assignment I look at my schedule, Block day tomorrow I think I'll just go back to sleep It doesn't matter, I have all studyhall I don't have time Thirty minutes left in study hall My assignment stares at me, unfinished I furiously write, racing the clock Each tick increases my heart rate Five minutes to go, panic sets in I put the period on my last sentence, the bell rings My friends ask why I wait? I can think of only one answer Why does it matter? I had time
