Alone

Alone

A Poem by E.M.Oglesbee

Daylight creeps over the rubber as the dust settles

Smog of sulfur and decay burns your nostrils

Fires fueled by men’s livelihood burn all around.

The city lays in newly received silence,

you walk alone

Alone....

As you step, whispers of the once were’s crunch beneath your heavy boots,

Those boots saturated by greed and suffering.

Phantom cries sound, echoing off the ruins.

Maddening are the screams, ever persistent,

Shrieking before you, whipped into service by a greater power.

Your eyes close, hopeful that darkness will offer safety,

The sound grows, rubies burst forth from overwhelmed ears.

Crippling is the lament of the departed.

You fall to your knees, defeated.

Eyes open to confront Satan’s choir, and you find yourself,

Alone.....
