Prologue

Clara

I stared at the tree longing for my mother. “Clara! Get over here, the ceremony is starting,” Ella yelled at me. I don’t remember much about my mother’s funeral I only remember wanting to go back to the car to get my special cuddly it was all I had left of my mother. I didn’t want to go over to Ella, to listen to all the adults mourning.

That night I was left all alone in my room, Ella wasn’t there I don’t remember much about that either except for Ella’s absence and hearing my dad’s drunken mates downstairs. I cried myself to sleep wishing my mother was there.

Dad woke me up very early the next morning and Ella still wasn’t back, he growled at me, “hurry up and pack your things. Get into the car.” he yelled, “You’re going away and you won’t be coming back, it will be better for you with your new family.” I didn’t understand what he meant at the time, why wouldn’t I come back, would I ever see him again, what about Ella would I ever see her again. All these thoughts came crashing through my mind as we drove on in silence; it was a long car ride and I have come to realise that these thoughts that were clouding my mind, shouldn’t be the thoughts of somebody so young. The car stopped abruptly at a nice house, a house I grew up to call my home. I remember going out into the big backyard and sitting amongst the flowers they reminded me of my mother I had always gone and helped her with her beautiful garden.
