Ants and Masses

Ants and Masses

A Poem by Ocean Doubtfire

Like clockwork, ants invert the disarray

That nature lends, and architect a law

That, followed well, makes each disciple more

Than wayward particles that will decay.

A perfect moralist, he’ll never stray

From pathways trod a trillion times before,

Each ant has no confusion what it’s for

In colonies’ tight-knitted interplay.

Once greater than the sum of all its parts,

I wonder what such hustle has achieved;

The city booms, its citizenry grinds

In duty to some master of their hearts,

A common conscience it could be believed,

A microcosm of a grander mind.
