Girl on the tracks

Girl on the tracks

A Poem by D Oakley
"

A poem about a train journey shared with a young drug addict girl

"
How did you get here

This journey

The girl on the tracks

Eyes rolling deep, far inside your head

Searching for life's connection

Just an umbilical chord cut away

Somehow you fell so far

How did you get here

This story untold

Your frail carriage jolts suddenly

Closer to a world you left behind

You reach out to the few possessions

Laying abandoned beside you

And with your strength and will

Your phone is connected

You listen

Listen to those distant loving voices

Searching once again, searching

And my eyes they are watering now

As I watch and wonder if they feel you

Or shut themselves away some time ago

But through these crying eyes

I see you

I feel you

The girl on the tracks

You made a connection

Something so close

Within reach that you will never know

Something so strong

Stronger than the devils blood inside you

I feel you and I am human

But my life awaits

So I say goodbye

I stand so still now

And watch this train take you away

To some other place

Some other time

And wonder to myself

How could I so easily let you go

For after all

The girl on the tracks

You are still human.
