Stars

This is my first poem.

I see the stars in the sky
When I look they're high
High, high in the night
They never looked so bright

On the hill in which I sat
They're so bright I need a hat
A hat that you need for sun
Looking at stars is so fun

This is pretty good for your first poem. It was light-hearted and flowed farily well, a lot better than many poems I read on here.

Being that this is your first poem, I'm not going to critique it (unless you want me to), but I will tell you how to improve your poetry skills in general. Often, beginner poets make the mistake of forcing their poems to rhyme, meaning that they just throw in seemingly unnecessary lines just for the sake of rhyming. It can be very distracting while reading. That's why I suggest starting with free-verse. It allows for so much more free expression to focus on other aspects of poetry such as creating and maintaining a mood, imagery, figurative language, etc... Just read and write and keep trying; eventually, you'll get better.
