The Forgotten Corridors

A Story by Nwright

I made this mystery narrative writing for an assignment my english teacher assigned me. She let us choose the story's subject. I actually didn't do it until like 5 days before it was due.

A teenage girl is lying on a dusty floor "Ugh" grumbles Sarah. She awakens and realizes that she’s not in her room from the scent. Sarah almost immediately feels the carpet being moist, she also notices it being strangely yellow. A throbbing pain shoots through her frontal lobe and after a few seconds, she assumes it's because of her dehydration. As she elevates herself from the ground she yelps, “Ack!”, as she topples over from the pain which subsides after a minute or two. Sarah then tries to get up again, so she leans against the wall and slowly makes her way up. She succeeds and stands fully up.  She notices that she’s not in her or any room she’s familiar with. She feels like she can walk again, and goes for the door. As Sarah looks back from the door, she sees nothing unusual in the putrid-smelling room. So, she decides to leave behind the possibly only safe room in this place unknown to her.

While Sarah was contemplating what to do, she remembered when her father had said, “Always stick to a wall and walk along it until you find the exit if you're in a maze.” So, Sarah with her short-sighted thinking, followed her father's advice and stuck along the right wall. After a few minutes, Sarah gave up and decided to follow her original plan because her father's advice was leading her nowhere. When she gave up her search, she almost immediately noticed a sound she couldn’t hear when she had left the room. The sound reminded her of the shriek belonging to a friend she knew. As she jogs to the origin of the sound, she thinks, “What’s happening over there?” When she reaches the sound’s origin. She’s shocked to find her friend, Charlie, and 8 raccoons trying to take what’s in her purse. She’s violently thrashing while shouting profanities at the animals. Sarah grabs a few rocks on the floor near the wall and chucks them at the raccoons. The animals decide to retreat after one of their kin gets hit. “Are you alright?” Asked Sarah while helping Charlie up. “I’m alright, but do you feel okay? You don’t look so well yourse--”  Charlie muttered but yelped once she saw a beetle on her leg. Sarah ignored her and heard another cry for help from someone close to them. “Do you hear that in the distance?” Sarah blurts out as she scrambles to pick up Charlie’s things that fell out of her purse. Sarah has a faint look of confusion that goes away quickly when she picks up a paring knife but decides to slip it back into Charlie's purse.  They start running to the sound of the voice unfamiliar to them. After a minute, they pass the corner and find an odd-looking boy. He seems around the same age as them, but the clothes he wears remind them of someone who came out of a movie with a sinking boat. “Hi there,” Shouted Charlie. The boy gives no response as he backs up out of their sight while looking at something they couldn’t see from their perspective. Sarah thought it was strange while Charlie dashed over to see where the boy went and what he was looking at. “Hey, there’s nothing here?” Exclaims Charlie. Sarah was still curious about what made the boy run away from them in this lonely place. After a minute of looking around, they decide to follow the direction of where the boy went. They ran for what seemed like an eternity. “Did the boy take a turn or what,” Charlie protested at Sarah for still making her come to find the boy with her. They decided to just give up and then resumed their search for the exit. When they turned the corner, they found the boy hiding behind an old vase that looked gray because of the dust. “Don’t you run away now!” Charlie shouted at the boy while pointing at him. The boy startled by the sudden loud yelling, came closer to introduce himself and get her to stop. “Hi, I’m Thomas. How’d you get here?” said Thomas “We don’t know how, we just woke up here after we ” exclaimed Sarah as she responded on both of their behalf. “Wait no, I was in my house but I fell through the wall. It was as if the wall didn’t exist” responded Charlie to Sarah’s past statement. “Well, I don’t care for how you both got here, I’m just trying to find a way out” stated Thomas. “So are we, would you care to join us in finding the exit?” Sarah said while her throat felt as itchy as if 50 mosquitoes bit it. As Thomas ignored her violent coughing and scratching, he stated that he would join them on their search.

As they went on their way to find something useful, they stumbled upon a door that seemed to differ from the rest. “Is it me, or does this door have a weird vibe to it?” asked Charlie. “Stop with your conspiracy theories and let's look around” Sarah exclaimed. As they searched for something, they forgot about Thomas who was standing in the corner without anything to do. “Hey Thomas, do you mind helping us look around in this classroom?” Shouted Sarah behind a dusty bookshelf. “I don’t mind, I’ll help look over near the desk at the front.” Shouted back to Sarah. The flickering dirty gold-colored lights weren’t helping them look around so much as the flashlights in Charlie’s purse did. Sarah kept looking near the bookshelves and found a peculiar-looking book not match the rest nearby. As she pulled it, a part of the wall nearby opened up. “Woah” exasperated Sarah. Sarah decided to look inside, and when she looked in, and found a book. Sarah’s description of the book was that it had an ominous aura surrounding it and looked like it would be the devil’s favorite novel. As she took the book to the others, she decided to open to the first page. Her vision blurred as she looked at the page and almost passed out. Thomas came out of nowhere and closed the book swiftly. “Hey, where did you find this book?” Questioned Thomas with a happy expression, it looked like he was trying to hide. “I found it over there” responded Sarah. Then Sarah pointed in the direction of where she got the book, but the hole and the book she moved weren’t there anymore. “There’s nothing here?” said Thomas. “I swear it was there!” Exclaimed Sarah with a tone of disbelief. Thomas showed a faint hint of hatred when he turned around to look around. “Can I have the book back?” shouted Sarah. “No.” Said Thomas coldly. Sarah was a little confused but searched around and found an old water bottle. She poured a little water out and tried it and it tasted normal, so she decided to take it. The group decided to come to the middle of the group with their findings. “Did you find anything,” Asked Sarah. The other two stated that they found nothing, and Thomas didn’t show the book. Sarah thought it was suspicious but didn’t say anything. After a while of silence, Charlie began contemplating what to say because neither of them said anything, “So guys, how about we keep looking around?” “Sure Charlie,” responded Sarah as they left.

As the trio spent an hour or two walking around the place, Sarah suddenly felt the urge to enter the room to her left. The door in question was ordinary and old-looking like most of the others. The only difference was it being double doors. “Hey guys, can we check out this room?” asked Sarah. Charlie nodded, while Thomas’s eyes looked oddly blank when he shrugged in response. When they entered the room, only two of the three were amazed to find a cafeteria. After a few seconds, Charlie looked around the strangely clean cafeteria and found a door leading to the place she assumed to be a kitchen. “Hey guys! I found the kitchen!” Charlie shouted due to her being on the other side of the massive room. “We’ll be there in a second Charlie.” Shouted back Sarah whilst sighing. She was getting quite bored here, so she decided to look around like Charlie and found a tile out of place near the corner of the wall. She decided to press it and something fell from the ceiling that was as high as a two-story building. The object that seemed to fall was a unique-looking pen. She put it in her pocket before noticing something else strange about the room she was in. She questioned the two weird windows showing an outside garden with a normal-looking street with cars. Sarah thought the cars looked blurry as if it were a detail in a game that hadn’t fully loaded yet. She also noticed that all the houses looked identical to each other. The two windows looked like they would’ve had a door in the middle, but there were only two plants and a bright red exit sign. She mistook the detail as a mistake in construction. While Sarah was looking around over there, Thomas was looking at a wall with the blank expression that he’s had for a while. When Charlie shouted for her companions to come to her another time, Thomas jumped as if startled. His blank expression vanished as he turned to go with the two others. When the others came to the room, Charlie excitedly exclaimed, “I found a cake in the fridge!” “What? Is that even good anymore?” questioned Sarah. “It looks good,” responded Charlie. Thomas decided not to butt into their argument and just voted to eat the cake. Sarah was already outvoted and begrudgingly decided to join in because she was hungry. They all thought the cake tasted oddly good, it was as if it had been baked a minute beforehand. When they finished the cake, they all unanimously decided to leave and search for the exit again.

When they all left, they took a left after 3 minutes, took a right, and walked in that direction for another 7 minutes. To them, it felt like an eternity. “Does anyone think that this place is weird? Like, we’ve been walking for a while and just keep walking. It’s like there’s no end to this place.” Charlie annoyingly grumbled as she slouched forward. “Come on, it’s not that bad. It’s probably just a big…” Sarah said as she began to ponder what the place they were in could be. As they walked, Thomas, who was in the back suddenly started running as if his life depended on it while seeming to know where he was going. “Come back!” Shouted Sarah as she and Charlie began to run. Sarah began coughing again and had to slow down a bit, Charlie didn’t slow down to stay with her friend. As Sarah turned the corner, A massive wave of Dread fell upon her. Fear was the only thing she could comprehend as she saw something in the far distance. A creature beyond her understanding was in her path. The creature she saw had a black mist. The creature could’ve been described as the devil’s pet.  Of course, Thomas was standing in the front, while Charlie was standing farther back. After a few seconds, Sarah bit her lip to distract herself from the intense atmosphere, and she caught up to Charlie. They both saw Thomas's reaction become more potent than ever as they knew him as he said, “Finally, my Lord. I’ve waited for so long to finally meet you.” Thomas got on his knees and began worshiping the being. The creature showed no emotion to his actions. Thomas started talking again, “I beg of you, my lord, rid me of my ties to this forsaken world. I bring upon you two teenagers as sacrifices. I wish to leave this world by your hand!” The boy the girls thought they once knew, looked to be aging at an incredible rate. In just a mere few moments, he was already an old man. The creature started charging in and bashed into Thomas knocking him into the wall. The book he hid in his jacket flew out and landed in front of Sarah. Sarah instinctively picked up the book swiftly, grabbed Charlie’s arm, and started running in the opposite direction. They heard thuds, but only Sarah looked to see a section of the wall where Thomas used to be splattered with blood and pieces of his body. Sarah turned back almost crying, then remembering that she barely knew the guy. She suddenly felt a lot better and the tears that were forming disappeared. The duo suddenly noticed that the end of the hallway had not looked as far as it used to be before. Sarah also noticed that the creature was slightly faster than they were and was catching up at an absurd rate. Sarah shouted, “Charlie! I need your knife,” “What? How did yo"” shouted Charlie in a rushed manner but Sarah interrupted. “It doesn’t matter right now, just give it!” “Okay fine!” As Charlie gave the knife to Sarah, Sarah turned her head quickly and threw the knife directly at the creature. It did not affect whatsoever on the creature, except for a faint twitch from the creature. Sarah suddenly felt like she was suffocating as the atmosphere became more and more dense the closer the entity got. She remembered that the pen might’ve had a special effect like the book, so Sarah pulled the pen out and pressed the button. It let out a holy melody that only an angel could ever dream of replicating. The creature shrieked as the sound played. The sound stopped after a few seconds. While the creature was in pain due to the sound, the girls kept running. The creature, seeming more angry than ever, opened its mouth and its tongue shot out, piercing Charlie’s thigh. Sarah noticed instantly and instinctively hoisted Charlie onto herself and ran. The creature's tongue flew right out just as it had come into her leg. They saw the exit being so close to them. Charlie fell unconscious from blood loss while on Sarah’s back, and Sarah was reaching her limit. “I’m so close.” Thought Sarah. She was on the verge of collapsing due to fatigue, but she persevered and managed to fully push through the exit door with Charlie on her back. The monster was inches away from turning her into a puddle of blood. The only thing Sarah saw beyond the door was just a bright white light. The bright white light embraced her with a warm feeling. She felt as if this nightmare was finally over, and it was. For now.

“Can you hear me?” asked a black silhouette in a bright light staring at Sarah. “Ugh… Where am I?” Asked Sarah trying to remember what happened. “You're in a hospital. You’ve been unconscious for a day now. We did an MRI after the police found you on the side of the road in a forest. We found a brain tumor after we reviewed your photos.” Said the nurse sadly as she sighed. “What? I’d never known that!?” Sarah panicky blurted out. “We figured you’d already known, but when we reviewed your files you never had it discovered.  The policeman who brought you in can explain the rest.” said the nurse as she left the room. “Wait!” Sarah shouted. No response came back.

After a bit of waiting, Sarah began thinking about what happened to her, but her mind was drawing a blank. Sarah’s mind came back together when she saw a policeman pop into the room. “Hello madam, I’m Jeffery. I’m the man who found you,” mentioned Jeffery. “Hi Mr. Jeffery, what happened to me?” questioned Sarah while looking quite puzzled and quite concerned. “I was driving back home from work, and I saw two girls lying on the ground on the side of the road. They both were unconscious when I went to check on them. They also both seemed beaten up. The girl next to you had a hole in her thigh.” “Is she alright?!” Shouted Sarah, almost immediately she covered her mouth because she accidentally yelled at a police officer. “Yes, she’s fine. She is getting prepped for surgery right about now. But more importantly, what happened to you? When I found you, there was blood everywhere near your mouth, and you seemed almost dead.” Told Jeffery in a concerned manner. “I'm fine Mr. Jeffery, I just have a slight cough. But I have a question for you” Asked Sarah hurriedly. “Ask away,” said Jeffery in a calm manner, which seemed strange to her because he had a genuine tone of concern in his response prior. “Where is my stuff? I’m pretty sure I had a book and pen” Hurriedly muttered out Sarah while questioning the police officer's behavior in her mind. “Oh, your stuff is over there. There is no pen though,” said Jeffery in a confused manner. “What? I swear I had a pen. Also is there a… Person named Thomas that was found near or with us?” Questioned Sarah seriously. “Not that I can think of,” Jeffery responded. “Oh okay, have a good afternoon Mr. Jeffery.” Shouted Sarah as she coughed while Jeffery was about to leave the room. “Have a good day, Sarah. Also, did you enjoy the cake I left for you all?” Said Jeffery as his eye twitched, becoming pure pitch black for a second as he left, turning away from her with a grin. Sarah felt her blood run cold as she processed what he said. Sarah felt like this had been the worst day of her life, so she thought deserved some rest. She’ll put off all of these questions flying through her head and leave it for tomorrow.
