Only Once

Only Once

A Poem by Nuits Macabres
"

What does the fairy represent to you?

"

How forever shall it be

This boy thought to himself

That a world so small can feel

So amazingly vast

Through many lonesome twilights

That led to bitter dawns

This boy wondered fruitlessly

How long he must wait there

Lo, unto me there is pain

Thought he who sighs with gloom

Forced am I to be ever

Forsaken, dejected

So it was then that one night

A fairy did appear

With miniature stature

And fanciful raiment

Hovering, dancing, charming

She flitted afore him

With a coquettish voice

She twirled and spoke to him

“Wherefore do you sit and brood?

Do you not like my wings?

I painted them with colors

From yesterday’s sunset

With annoyance the boy glared

Burning eyes of contempt

Intrusion unwarranted

He raised his hand to her

“Be gone tiny girl,” he said

“And leave me to my rue

There is not a place for you

Amidst my misery”

With no wound to her intent

She dodged his swat with grace

Unabated she approached

And gaily did she dance

“Did you not like my dancing?

I can try another

I can sing you lullabies

Or pick you some flowers”

Said he, “What is it with you

That you should persist still?

What will it take to lose you?

Shall I find a weapon?”

“If you so wish,” she replied

“I can leave you alone

It was my understanding

That you needed a friend”

“I do not need any friends

Certainly not like you

If you do not fly away

I should force you to go”

Her heart heavy, she did turn

Her eyes shadowed and sad

But before she cast away

She had something to say

“You should not be so spiteful

In the face of friendship

It is when you turn to stone

That you’re truly alone

“If I come this way again

I’ll see if you feel better

But as sometimes can happen

I may not make it back”

Now as many years have passed

Youth has fallen away

Since the time his fairy came by

No one has come to call

And so it was that the boy

Waited not for his end

But for her return to him

And never did she come

Too late did he realize

Only after she left

His misery forgotten

For this new loneliness

For only once did he know

The pleasure of a friend

For only once did he have

A chance to be alive.
