A Night to Remember

A Night to Remember

A Story by Nudnick

It was a brisk evening at the Kinsman Mansion. The only refuge from the frigid darkness was the warming glow that emanated from the lively terrace behind the castle-esque estate. A celebration of great heights, the graduate class of Kinsington University gathered for one fantastic evening to cap off their studies. Laughter, the shuffle of dozens of dancing feet, and music echoed into the night, battling the spirit-draining cold of the evening. Above the buzz of the evening, the tinking of a glass took everyone’s attention. The music stopped and everyone turned. It was the top pupil of the class, Happy McGiggle-Bottom, proposing a toast,

“Hear hear! Hear hear! Fellow Spartans! It has been a grueling 6 years of study, but we have done it: Master’s Degrees of Applied Clownship, all around!”

“HA-HA-HEE-HEE-RAAAAAAAAAAAA!”

The crowd roared, surely waking anything sleeping within a mile. And just as it left off, the joyous gathering resumed. The unmistakable sound of a high-pitched squeaky horn slowly materialized in the music entertaining the guests, replacing the underlying beat. The room was full of colour, mainly from the tacky, baggy, garments worn by the esteemed attendees. It was now evident that what could be mistaken as the sound of feet shuffling in a coordinated dance was really just the sound of ill-fitting floppy shoes tripping over each other.

The evening would not be fooled any longer. Using its full force of spirit-sucking shrill darkness, the evening descended on the party like one enormous blanket. The last awful squeak of the horn squeaked and the last hoagie-shoed buffoon stumbled " the entire property was still. Not even the great Happy McGiggle-Bottom could muster up the strength to let out even a chuckle in defense. And just like that, the entire graduating class was drained of their foolishness, leaving the learnings of the past 6 years worthless.
