The Questions I Would Ask

The Questions I Would Ask

A Poem by November Gold
"

If just another moment were mine...

"

If I had just a moment there are things I would ask,

Like what empowered your soul,

And made your heart beat fast?

What brought tears to your eyes and truly touched your heart?

What made you want to quit, and what made you start?

These are just some of the things I’d want to know about you

Let’s take a drive in the moonlight, just us two.

Or maybe we would sit by the ocean and listen to the waves;

Perhaps you’d tell me stories of people, and places

That you’ve stayed.

I would drink in your life lessons as you shared them all with me,

I’d tell you about what has been, and we’d anticipate what would be.

The words feel stuck in there somewhere,

like they will suffocate me;

I just need some air.

I see you sitting there next to me,

The glowing sun setting across the water;

We don’t need words in that space;

You are my father; I am your daughter.

In a moment the tears begin to fall,

There is no stopping them;

Nor a desire to at all.

Like a warm summer rain gives the hot dry earth a drink,

Your spirit comes to me when I need you

And lifts me before I sink.

A whisper from your lips, a message so clear;

In the warmth of the sun, or the glow of the moon

I’m never alone, you’re always near.

The waves of the water sing us a song,

I close my eyes and breathe it all in;

I can feel you, you've been here all along.

How do I ease my mind when words won’t come,

How do I know when to stand strong;

And when its better to run.

These are just some of the questions that I’d ask

As we sit there at the water;

You are my father; I am your daughter.

I love this kiddo!! I can feel the emotions and desires of wants and needs. Beautifully written! Somewhere out there, this man knows your heart and I believe at moments of need somehow fills those voids with a strength that doesn't come from no where as OUR strengths always come from SOMEWHERE! love ya kiddo!

This is so beautiful... it all boils down to that last sentence doesn't it? As flawed and fractured my old man was, he was still my dad and a person... and you expressed all of the feelings that are tied up in that conflicted, complex and oh so complicated relationship. Well done and thank you for sharing this.

I hate answering this question. It requires me to tell you who I am...the problem is that I am still learning about who I am everyday, and sometimes what I might tell you today, could change by this t.. more..
