Shadow RunnerA Poem by NotchHero
I stand here,
Looking out over the black city, Wondering why it is I stay, Why I don't get in the car and drive, And just leave it all behind me, Fading into the distance in my dusty mirrors. I stand and see, The people moving around below me. They do not see me, They do not know I watch them. They do not know I wish for their sake, That they will remain safe from harm. And I know, deep down, That my wishes hold no power, Not because the desire is fake, But because I prefer shadow to light, Prefer to hide and work, Rather than be seen and given credit. My soul is too dark to be invisible among the Light, But it is too light to be invisible among the Dark, So I became the shadow runner, the man of both, Who seeks only to ensure his secrecy and other's gain. I stood outside your house, just across the way, I watched, and made sure you were alright, Even when you said we were done, When you told me that it would best for me to leave. And so, leave I did, but I never forgot. Because my promises are forever, And until I am released from it, i will follow the promise I made to myself, With the lords of Light and Dark as witness. So I stand above the city, Watching it bustle, even through the night, I think of the people who counted on me in the past, The people I have let down. I think of my failed promises, And I wonder why, Why is it that I am so determined, To never let this one go?
