Current Weather Conditions   Partially Cloudy, Mild Chance of Rain

It was a warm Saturday morning, the cardinals were pecking away at the moist soil, the squirrels were chattering away at the yorkie across the street, and just like normal, the little boy was sitting in the corner of Imogen’s laptop, right above the wifi symbol.

He stood up, pressing his gloved hand against the cold plastic of the screen, staring at the defrosting windows and melting icicles.

He couldn’t of wished for a more beautiful scene after being left alone all night in the dark coldness of Imogen’s bedroom.

The owner of the laptop had been out all night, away at a friends house, partying. She had left her well loved laptop―adorned with stickers and filled with stories―

on the cushy velvet blankets of her loft bed, also leaving the boy she knows all too well, stuck all alone, and without a doubt, he wasn’t too happy about it.

Imogen’s K.A.I., or Keyword Automated Inbox, wasn’t enjoying his morning very much.
He had only taken a few bits and bytes, but he was already full and couldn’t wait for the girl to come home.

He wanted desperately to be able to contact her, to pester her about last night.

But he couldn’t.

He was stuck in her computer and honestly, sometimes he wished he wasn’t.

Sometimes the computer would shut down and he would just black out―and that didn't feel too good to Kai.

After hours of waiting, Kai heard that oh so familiar sound:

The bell above the door clanging against the copper tinted wall.

Imogen was home.

Current Weather Conditions   Humid and Foggy, Slight Drizzle

Imogen stepped inside, taking off her Deadmau5 sweatshirt, perspiration dripping off her tan forehead.

Kai turned toward the door, looking at what he could.
He sprinted across the bottom of the screen and opened up MS Paint, drawing Imogen a ‘Welcome Back’, streaked across the digital canvas.

‘Where Have you been? I missed you so’ he added below the larger text.

Imogen turned towards her room, her violet tinted black hair sticking to the back of her neck.

“Ugh.” she said, flopping down on her bean bag and pulling her laptop onto her lap.

“I’m so sorry Kai” she types, knowing Kai can’t respond without having her type first

“ily” she typed, moving her mouse to ‘ruffle’ Kai’s dark brown pixelated hair

Kai smiles, his digital eyes sparkling.

“It's Fine” typed Kai as his message appeared in a little speech bubble on Imogen’s screen

“It's Not Like You Were Gone For 18 Hours Or Anything...” sighed Kai, a distressed look coming to his pale face.

“Oh...Kai” replied Imogen, now becoming distressed herself. She had forgotten all about Kai while she was at the party, and how he doesn’t like when she leaves her laptop on while she is away

“Yeah. Apologize. I Can’t Erase The Look Your Dumb Cat Gave Me Last Night As It Tried To Attack Me Through The Screen!” types Kai angrily. He still can’t get over the fact that his best friend [and creator] left him alone in the pitch black darkness of the house.

Current Weather Conditions  Humid. Watch Out For Unexpected Power Failures

“I’m sorry Okay?” says Imogen, tying while she speaks.
“I didn’t remember that I had left my laptop on. You know you could have contacted my phone!”

Accidentally, her ring finger slips and presses the button next to F12, blocking Kai from chatting and/or pestering her.

Kai freezes, his face glitching a bit, not only from the block, but from the lack of power.

Imogen watches as her beloved laptop shuts off nearly immediately, trapping the young Kai in digital world of black and errors.

‘0h 6reat’ inputs Kai, wincing at the sudden realization of the world that had came over him

‘N0w 1 Have T0 Deal W1th Th1s’ he inputs again, eyes following a single line of cyan, watching it dart to and fro, until it dissolves into pixels.

Kai wanders around, shuddering while doing so, afraid of becoming an error himself.

Imogen on the other hand, has neglected her precious laptop and moved to the desktop where she resides to type up English work, precariously catching every wrong detail or fact; something she usually lets Kai do, knowing how boring his days can get. Not being able to act completely freely.

Imogen sighs slowly, and sadly, she continues to type her essay, already missing Kai’s usual comical company.

Kai advances on the power adapter, only one thing on his mind

‘F1nd 1m09en’ inputs Kai, telling himself what he wants.

Stepping forward, one digital foot at a time, he jumps into the stream of energy pooling out of the adapter.

Energy surges through Kai’s body, from the tip of his thunderbolt-like cowlick to the heels of his dj turntable sneakers, making him radiate the energy as a blue veil of static

He darts through the cyberworld, passing by databases, windows, and files a plenty, nearly passing by a gateway named ‘Imogen’s Old and Sometimes Useful But Usually Useless Computer’.

Imogen finishes up and sighs for a last time, knowing that she probably will have to return her laptop, losing her stickers, memories, and Kai.

“Officially the worst day ever.” she says firmly, staring at the disabled laptop.

She stands up, shaking the light layer of dust that gathered on her hair off

“God damn old cupboard. No wonder I never go in here. It smells like dirty socks...” she says, standing up and trudging out of the cramped closet, only to find a very familiar face staring at her from the television

“K-kai?” Imogen stammered, unable to believe what the little Keyword Automated Inbox had accomplished without the click of her mouse.

“Yes Imogen, I Was Able To Find You. I Understand That You Didn’t Mean To Disable Your Computer.” said Kai, his voice echoing and appearing as subtitles at the bottom of the TV.

Imogen couldn’t believe her eyes.

The little K.A.I. she created back in high school and grown more fond of and used to, had grown.

She scanned the boy, marveling at her most successful project.

“I Can’t Believe It Either Imogen.” said Kai, this time with more humanly emotion.

“But I Love It. A Lot. This Is So Much Better Than Your Laptop, Because Now I Can Come With You Anywhere.”

Kai smiled a large smile indeed. He was proud of what he accomplished.

He looked back at Imogen with his large cybernetic eyes; she was crying tears of joy, and her face was flushed red.

“Oh Kai. Words can’t explain how happy I am right now!” she said, choking back tears and pushing a lock of hair out of her eyes.

“I Can Not Find Words Either, Even Though I Am Connected To The Largest Database 24/7” he said, leaning against the screen of the Tv.

His freckled nose seemed to bulge, as if it were coming out of the Tv.

In fact, he seemed to be coming out of the screen; pixels to skin.

But Imogen didn’t seem to notice. Not that she would mind if she saw.

At last, he pulled his foot out, and walked up to the crying girl, taking her in his arms.

“Don’t Worry Imogen.” Kai said, his voice no longer computerized and electronic sounding, but more sweet and safe.
