![]() Christmas, Like ThatA Poem by NormaZ![]() A poem about the way we know people.![]()
You smelled like a Christmas tree,
not the pretend ones, with the fake balsam fragrance spray, not the white ones, with their co-ordinating blue lights, and balls. But a real tree, with real sticky sap, and needles that fell onto the living room carpet, more everyday. You tasted like peppermint, and made me hungry, for a thin mint, or a piece of hard candy, or peppermint stick ice cream melting in a cone on a hot August afternoon. You sounded like a bear, growling, in your sleep, on your back, hogging all the blankets. Then the growling would stop, and I would count the seconds, three, four, until you started growling again. You looked like a basketball player, all elbows and knees, huge feet that trod on little toys, hiding in the carpet, and your dark hair, standing at attention, like the Marine you once were. Your soul was like an earthquake, shaking when I least expected it. Along the fault lines, you fell, leaving your footprints, your elbows and knees, your growling snore, your peppermint taste, and your Christmas tree smell.
