Pretty Eyes

Pretty Eyes

A Poem by Nokomi Nāo

Hello pretty eyes

I'm loving the dress you got on

Are you staying here long?

Are you seeing someone?

Have you cottoned on

I'm not sure of my disguise

Have you heard them call me bent

I wish they'd just say 'different'

Do you think there's something wrong

With me? I ain't a hitter-on

Just ordinary small talk and soon I'll be gone

Hey pretty eyes

What they say is all spite-lies

Is what you must believe, or have I given myself away?

Hey pretty eyes

I know this brand of makeup that's nice

I've got some on me, no it don't make me pretty

But it's the only one that won't give me an allergy

Ain't nothing wrong with me

I'm straight and I'm forward, as you can see

Or have you seen through me, have you caught on?

Just ordinary girl talk and soon I'll be gone

You're listening, believing what they say

It's okay, got to hit the road anyway

Nice meeting you, pretty eyes

I'm imagining me lifting my disguise

And turns out you're different too

What a lovely surprise!

At first you're scared and you hold back

But then you take a plunge right in

And what they say can't touch us

We got our own song

And our only-us groove they can't break upon

Ain't nothing wrong with me

Just my body don't match with me

Tell me, what else should I believe?

Goodbye, pretty eyes

You're not the reason I can't stay

Neither are they, or the things they say

I'd got to hit the road anyway
