Handed down

Handed Down

Watching as a worm is threaded on a hook,
young eyes, learning,
a new skill, a new experience,
observing patiently, curious.

Suddenly I notice his hands,
clasped behind his back,
fingers woven together,
and a wave of memory washes over me.

Where did he learn this?
Who could have shown him?
This was my grandmother,
again, before my eyes.

She would stand,
hands clasped behind her back,
exactly as my grandson does today.
But she has passed, years before.

He never met her,
never knew her,
but here he stands,
the image of her, again.

Thank you Kelly, it was pretty special.
It is interesting when loved ones remind us of one who departed, almost like those traits are genetic… Of coarse I believe it is the spirit of deceased loved one being channeled through another loved one.

You are most welcome.
Such an emotional poem. I really liked the turning point, at first i thought it would just focus on the boy, but I love the change to that little memory and how it made the persona feel :)

This is amazing. Somethings are learned without being taught. Your grandmother lives in and through your grandson.
