Riley's First DayA Chapter by Noah Wayverlynn
Two weeks after Riley moved to Toledo, her first day of 8th grade arrived. Since she had never been to a middle school before, they gave her a placement test four days before her first day to verify that she was qualified to start eighth grade. Riley scored above the average score for eighth grade students, but she was still approved to be in eighth grade since she was new to the area. On her first day of school, Riley woke up to her 7:00 alarm. Her school started at 8:30, and she didn't want to be late. Her mother took the day off from work due to a cold, and she helped Riley prepare for school. "Does this look good enough?" Riley asks her mom with a smile. Riley was wearing a light blue top with black sweats. She wanted to go with a casual look so she wouldn't cause too much of a distraction. "You look fabulous Riley." her mom says as she helps put Riley's school supplies in her Hello Kitty backpack. As the girls ride over to Riley's school, Raquelle says "I hope you make some new friends here today." Riley nods, and then she reassures her mom that she will do her best. Fifteen minutes later, the girls arrive at the middle school. Riley waved at her mother as she walked in, and smiled as she was thinking about how she wanted her first day to be like. As Riley was walking into the building, a girl with brown hair and blue eyes runs up to her. "Hi. You must be Riley, the new girl. It is a delight to meet you. My name is Annabelle." The new girl smiled at Annabelle, and then replied. "Hi. it is a delight to meet you too. Yes my name is Riley, and I am a new student. I am originally from North Dakota, but my family just recently moved here." The girls kept talking as they walked to Riley's locker. "What locker number do you have this year?" Annabelle asks Riley with a happy tone. "I was assigned locker number one eighteen." the new girl responded as they reached her locker. "Nice! I am only three lockers away. My locker number is One fifteen" Annabelle smiles brightly as she opens her locker. A tall boy approaches locker one sixteen, and smiles at Riley as he puts his backpack and coat away. As Annabelle leaves to get to class, the boy with blonde hair and green eyes speaks up. "Hello there. My name is Kyle. what's yours?" Riley looks at him as she blushes, and she says "Hi. Nice to meet you Kyle. My name is Riley Aberdeen. I am a new student here." Kyle smiles at Riley as he takes his books out of his locker. "Nice to meet you Riley. Hey would you like to hang out sometimes. Maybe just the two of us?" Without hesitation, the new girls blurts out "Yes I would! That would be awesome!" Kyle gave Riley his number, and Riley gave him hers. Riley heads to her first class after she finishes up at her locker, and sits down in the front. Suddenly, the bell rang right at 8:45. Mr. Jackson got up from his seat, and exclaimed "Welcome class! please stand up so we can start with the seating chart." The students stood up, and walked to the side of the room. A few minutes later, all the students were sitting in their assigned seat. Riley was still sitting in front row, but a little more to the right. The English teacher printed off the course information sheet, because he was unprepared when the class began. Riley turned to look at a student who was sitting to the left of her, and noticed that she had a white cane folded up in her lap. "Hello. My name is Riley Aberdeen. I just moved here from North Dakota. What's your name?" The girl responded with a smile "My name is Nina. I am from here. I am a student who's completely blind, and I do my best at overcoming my disability. It's nice to meet you Riley. Nina and Riley exchange numbers, and write down email addresses before Mr. Jackson walked in again. As Mr. Jackson passed out the information sheet, Riley turns to Nina and tells her "Hey Nina. Since this is not in braille for you, I am willing to help you with this." Nina thanks Riley, and then listens to Mr. Jackson go through the sheet. Riley's English class on the first day was just an introduction to the class, and the next day was full of games before getting into the course itself. The bell rang at 9:35, and it was time for the next class. Riley's next class was gym, and she was very curious if they would start the course right away. As the students walked in, they sat on the bleachers with their materials on their laps. As Riley finds a spot in the third row, she waits for the bell to ring at 9:40. "Alright class! Today we are going to go over the course information, and then we are going to assign gym lockers to everyone." Mrs. Greenland exclaims as the bell rings. "As I call your name, you will come up and grab an information sheet as well as a lock for a gym locker. The number on the lock will determine which locker is assigned to you!" The gym teacher says. A few minutes later, all the students were called. Only two were absent that day. A boy named Kevin was absent because he was in a car accident on the way back from a neighboring city. A girl named Kate was absent because she broke her foot the day before, and she had to get crutches and a boot. As time passed, Mary J. Greenland talked and answered questions about the course. At the end of the period, she led the students to their gym lockers. Riley's gym locker was number eighteen, and her friend Annabelle's locker was number sixteen. The bell rang as Riley put her lock on her gym locker. Math was Riley's third class, and she was excited because Annabelle told her that she was in the same math class. Riley and Annabelle walked to their math class, and they talked a lot along the way. Close to the math classroom, Kyle runs into Riley and knocks her over. "Oh I'm sorry Riley. I should have paid more attention to where I was going." Kyle says with embarrassment. "Oh that's fine Kyle. There's nothing to worry about." Riley says as she picks up her things. Surprisingly, Riley got to class on time despite the incident. As she sat in her desk and got herself prepared, she couldn't help noticing Amy Bloom sitting next to her. Riley wanted to talk to Amy, but she noticed that Amy was too busy working on something to have a conversation. The main things they did the first day included going over the information sheet, students writing short introductions so they could introduce themselves to the class, and going around the classroom to complete a student survey. Finally, the bell rang at the end of class. Riley was going to the cafeteria for lunch, and she was very eager to know what was on the menu. The students had to line up in front of three windows that had each lunch choice, and the menu was above the three windows so the students can make their decision. First choice was macaroni and cheese with a side of mashed potatoes and watermelon. Second choice was chicken strips with a side of fries and chicken tortilla soup. Last choice was just a window for sandwiches or burgers with a side of fries and chips. Once the students get what they want, they have the option to get white milk, chocolate milk, apple juice, water, or energy drinks to go with their meal. Out of all the choices, Riley chose Macaroni and cheese. Once the students finish eating, one of the lunchroom supervisors dismisses the students by table number. The students don't have assigned seats, so they can sit at any table they want. If it's nice out, most of the popular students go outside to eat in the school's courtyard. They are dismissed depending on what section they are in. Riley was sitting at table one with Kyle, Annabelle, Amy Bloom, and some other students on her first day. "Table one dismissed." the announcer said once he had the students' full attention. Riley started walking to art class, and she could still hear tables being dismissed. Since there were so many students in the middle school, they were divided into three lunch sections. Once one section finishes lunch, the next section comes in. Riley has lunch 2 since she has art, social studies, and science in the afternoon. Raquelle wanted Riley to take art so she could possibly get into it, and find new friends who are into it as well. Riley discovers that her art classroom was colorful, bright, and spacious. Mr. Swan was writing the objective on the white board as the students poured in. Riley's art class had 20 students, and she was surprised that her class was not as big as she thought it would be. Surprisingly, Amy Bloom was in her art class as well. She was so excited to start a conversation with Amy about art. "So Riley, you're an art fan too I see." A boy in the class said as he sat at a table. He had black hair and green eyes, and he was new to the area as well. "Kind of. I am still getting into it. My mom signed me up for this class, because she wanted me to find some hobbies and make some new friends." Riley responded with a smile. "Cool. My name is Nolan Henderson. Feel free to let me know if you need anything. I am pretty good at art, because I started when I was in elementary school." Nolan knew Riley's name because of what it said on her art notebook. "Nice notebook by the way." Nolan added right before the bell rang. Riley smiled, but didn't say a word since she did not want to get in trouble on her first day. "Good afternoon class! We are going to start by going over what this class is about, and then we are going to fill out information about ourselves. Afterwards, we will go around the room and introduce ourselves. That should take up most of the time." Mr. Swan announced as he passed out the sheets. Samuel, a boy who had blonde hair and blue eyes, smiled at Riley as the silence continued. Samuel was sitting next to Nolan, but he didn't want to approach Riley with the teacher watching. Tia Zanni was sitting next to Riley, and said "You know Riley, I wish we could just get into the course and skip all the information sections." As Tia kept talking, Mr. Swan came up to their table and said "Tia! focus! This information section is important. You need this just in case you have a question outside of class, and this tells you how to contract me." Riley smiled as Tia faced the front, and Mr. Swan returned to the podium that was placed in front of the white board. Suddenly, when the teacher was starting to go through the information sheet, A girl named Skye was laughing out loud at something. The teacher went over to Skye's table, and said "Skye Anderson, put that phone away, or I will have to take it away until the end of the class." Skye refused to put it away and refused to give it to Mr. Swan, so Mr. Swan sent her to the principal. "Hi. I just sent Skye Anderson down. She refused to put her phone away after I caught her watching a YouTube Video. She also refused to give it to me, so I sent her down. Alright, thanks." Mr. Swan told the principal on the phone. Once he hung up, class continued. "Now as I was saying,..." the teacher said. As time passed, Riley was getting more and more enthusiastic about art class. Finally, the bell rang and it was time for science. As Riley walked to class, a girl named Lina stopped her. "So, you're the new girl huh? Well, stay away from Kyle. He's mine. Oh and by the way, that outfit looks so unattractive on you. Don't bother trying to protect yourself, because you're weak." Lina went on and on, but suddenly noticed a teacher saying her name. Lina turned around, and nearly stepped on her toe. "What Mrs. Rose! Go away, because you can't defend that weak new girl." Mrs. Rose glared at Lina, and said "Lina, come with me. Bullying is unacceptable at this school, and students who do it will be disciplined. Riley, ignore what she said. Go on now, head to class before you're late." As the teacher led Lina to the office, Riley walked to class. She was almost late when she stepped into her social studies class. "Hi. You must be Riley, the new girl. I am Ms. Lavina, your science teacher. Welcome!" Riley sat in the empty desk, and class began. There was nothing new going on yet in Riley's class, but there was the same process that her teachers were following on the that day. Science class was her last After science, it was time for Riley to go home. She did not have to take social studies, because she was already advanced enough to the point where she was exempt from taking the class. Riley started walking down to the front doors when she suddenly heard her name through the school speakers. "Riley Aberdeen to the office please. Thank you" As Riley got to the office, the secretary said "Riley, your mom and counselor want to talk to you about something in private." Riley went to a private room with Raquelle and Mrs. Rosaguard. "I witnessed Riley being bullied by a student named Lina, and I thought it would be best to talk it over." the Counselor says softly. As Riley notices her mom and counselor look at her, she starts to tell her story. "Well, I was heading to math class and a girl stopped me. She told me to stay away from a boy named Kyle, because apparently he's "hers". She told me that my outfit looked unattractive on me, and showed me all types of disrespect." Riley says as she starts to cry. A few minutes later, the private meeting was over. Besides the incident with Lina, Riley had a really good first day. Raquelle was very interested in hearing about her day. Riley told her mom that she made some new friends on the first day, and she really wanted to get to know them well enough to hang out. As the night drags on, Riley and her parents have a family game night. It lasted for hours, and Riley finally got to bed by ten. Riley and her parents say good night, and then they head to their rooms. The girl climbs into bed, and prays for a good night sleep. She turns out her light afterwards, and falls asleep.
