In The Mirror

A Chapter by Noah Wayverlynn

Two days after their first day of second grade, the Aberdeen kids were enjoying the weekend. Erika had the same behavior for the past two days, and no one attempted to go near her. "Erika, we are going swimming. Would you like to join us?" Raquelle asks from outside the bedroom. "No!" Erika yells without hesitation. With a sad look, the mother of four went to inform the rest of the family that Erika was not going with. Todd reaches for the phone so he could call a babysitter to come watch Erika. The phone rings twice until someone finally picks up "Thank you for calling May's Babysitting Service. This is Tess....how can I serve you." a voice says with enthusiasm. "Hello Tess. My name is Todd Aberdeen, and I need a babysitter for my daughter Erika. She's acting up, and she doesn't want to go swimming with us. We'll be going swimming for three hours, so we need someone to look after her until we get back." As the conversation continues, the girls get ready to go. "We love you Erika." they all said as they walked out of the room. Once Todd finishes talking with Tess on the phone, He says "Okay. we just need to wait for the babysitter to get here then we can go." A few minutes later, there's a knock on the door. "Hello, thank you for coming on such short notice." The babysitter comes in, and says "No problem. now where's Erika?" Raquelle points to the stairs, and replies "She is in her room right now, and she may not come down very much. Just check on her every few minutes to be sure she isn't doing anything bad. Just be warned that she is a troubled second grader, and she has been acting like this for the past two days." The babysitter nodded, and then she says "My name is May by the way." After thanking her for the service, the couple and the three girls head out. They left a note on the table for May. As May hangs out in the living room for a little bit until she goes upstairs to check on the girl, Erika sits by a mirror and talks to her reflection. "I wish life wasn't so complicated. I wish my family wasn't poor and in debt. I wish I was good enough for people." Suddenly, her magic bracelet activates, and Erika stands up to walk forward. She thought all she'd do is bump the mirror, but she went through the mirror as she went forward. The room Erika stepped into was kind of like her room, but much different. The room was bigger, and there was only one bed there. "Huh? Where am I?" Erika asks herself once she realized her surroundings. Another difference was that Erika was older than she was before crossing into the new world. "Erika, is that you?" a voice calls quietly. "Yes it's me. I'm Erika." she responds happily. "it's so good to see you darling! come on downstairs, I have something for you." the female voice responds to Erika's statement. Erika gets up, and runs downstairs to see what was there for her. "Mom, is that you? I thought you and dad went swimming with the girls." Erika replies surprised. "No your dad and I didn't go swimming, and what girls are you talking about? You're our only child." With a smile on her face, Erika proceeds to open the present her mother bought. "My favorite perfume! how did you get this?" Erika asks as she jumps for joy. "We bought it for you dear." Erika's mom responds with a warm smile. "Wow that's an expensive type of perfume. I thought we were poor and in debt." Erika says with a surprised look. "No we are not poor, and we're not in debt. In fact, we'll be moving to a better house soon." Requelle says with an excited tone. Erika was so happy that she ran up to her bedroom to spray some perfume on. Afterwards, her parents took her to a Taylor Swift concert since Erika loved Taylor Swift. Back in Erika's real home and real world, May the babysitter went upstairs to check on her. "Erika, are you here?" she asks as she walked up to the door. With no response, May searches the home for the missing girl. Three hours passed, and the Aberdeen family returned from their swimming trip. "Thank goodness you're here Mr. and Mrs. Aberdeen. Your daughter isn't in her room, and she isn't anywhere in the house." May says with a worried tone. As they searched the house again, the girls look in their room again. They stopped at their mirror, and said "Ugh! Erika where did you go? We're worried about you." Surprisingly, Erika was back from the concert and she heard voices coming from the mirror. "Hello! who's there? Show yourself!" she says with a fearless tone. As she touched the mirror with her bracelet, the mirror showed her former room. Her sisters would be able to see her, but they wouldn't be able to go forward into the mirror like she did. "Erika? where are you? We're looking all over for you, and we're worried sick about you." Rapunzel says sadly. Suddenly, May and Erika's parents stand behind the three girls. "Erika what are you doing in there? Get out of there this instant!" May says with a mad tone. After listening to their pleas, Erika runs downstairs to get her parents to come look at what she sees. Erika reappears with her parents with her, and they sit on the bed. They hear the pleas of the people from the other side, and they discuss it once they hear everything. "Bunny girl, if you want to go back then go ahead." Raquelle tells Erika. "No I do not want to go back. I'm staying here." Erika says as the hugs her parents. "Come on Erika. Come home to your real family." everyone from the other side plea. "Come on Erika, we'll come back to this later. There's something special we want to do with you." Raquelle and Todd exclaim while ignoring the mirror. Erika nods, and they leave the room. A few minutes later in their Mustang Convertible, Raquelle and Todd tell Erika "Since you don't want to go back, we are going to change your identity so they stop telling you to go back. We are going to give you a makeover, and then we are going to change your name to Riley May Aberdeen. When they try begging you to go back again, just tell them that there's no one named Erika living there. Besides, if you go back you'll still be a second grader. Right now, you're thirteen and several grades higher." Erika nods as they pull into the parking lot of a famous makeover place called "Jammin' Makeovers". As they step into the area, a worker says "Welcome to Jammin' Makeovers. What can we do for you today?" Raquelle hands the worker a list, and says "Can you do these by any chance?" After the worker looks at the list, they nodded to reassure that she was in the right place. As Raquelle and Todd sit down to wait for their daughter, Erika and the worker head on back to get started. About an hour later, Raquelle and her husband were greeted by a teenager standing in front of them. At first they didn't recognize her, but they finally did when Erika said "Mom...Dad...I'm ready to go." They already paid for the makeover a few minutes before she came out, so they were ready to just head out. "Thanks for stopping in!" someone said as they headed out. As they got in the car, Todd said "Next stop is the courthouse. It's time for a name change." Erika clapped as the car pulled out of the parking lot. Erika now had long blue hair with bangs, and green eyes. Her skin with brighter, and she was unrecognizable. When they arrived at the courthouse, Erika said to herself "Doing it for the best." The walked up the steps and entered the courthouse, and someone greeted them from the front desk. "Hello. what brings you in today?" a man asks as he sets his work aside. "Hi. my name is Raquelle, and this is my husband Todd. We would like to request a name change for our daughter Erika. We would like to change her name to Riley." Raquelle said as she pulled out $30.00 out of her wallet to pay for the name change. In their area, all they had to do was pay for the name change and request it. "Alright. so change it to Riley May Aberdeen?" the man asked smoothly. Todd and Raquelle nodded. "Here you go." the worker said as he handed a slip of paper with the new name on it. They thank the man for his service, and then they head out to start heading home. When they arrived home, Riley went to her room to get ready for bed. "Erika! please come home." the three sisters plead from the mirror. Riley went up to the mirror, and said "Sorry, my name isn't Erika. My name is Riley. There is no one here named Erika. I don't want to hear you say that name again, because she doesn't exist." Riley took off her bracelet, and threw it at the mirror. The mirror looked fine on her side, but it was shattered on the other side. Strange, but that was the case. Riley turned off her light, and climbed into bed. On the other side of the mirror, her sisters noticed that the mirror was shattered. Lacey went to get her mom to clean up the pieces of the mirror. "What happened in here?" Raquelle asks as she enters the room. "Well, you know how Erika suddenly ended up in the mirror? She said her name was Riley, and there was no one there by the name of Erika. When she finished saying that, the mirror was mysteriously broken into pieces." The girls said at once. Everyone cried for a moment, and prayed for Erika to come back home. Then, Raquelle tucked the girls into bed. She turned off the light, and then closed the door.
