Settling In

this chapter focuses on Maybell and Demetrah settling into the Days Inn Hotel.

"Here we are Demetrah!" Maybell says with excitement. Walking to into the hotel lobby, Maybell tells Demetrah to wait in the car while she checks in. "Hi. How can I help you?" the hotel asks Maybell with a warm smile. "Hi. I'm Maybell, and I came here from Mississippi. My friend and I would like a hotel room to stay in for a while until we find an apartment for us." Maybell tells the hotel employee. As the hotel employee checked for a room available, she said "Yes, we do have a room available. that would be $18.00 with one dollar deposit fee." With an excited tone to her voice, Maybell accepts the hotel room offer. Maybell looks at the worker, and asks "My friend is blind, so can you help us find our room?" The worker hands Maybell a map of the hotel, and says "if you go downstairs, your room is the second door on the left." Maybell thanks the hotel worker, and pays for the hotel. Grabbing the hotel key  for their room, Maybell heads back out to the car to get some of the luggage and help Demetrah find the room. "I will grab the luggage  from the car, and you can just relax and settle in." With a hug and a smile, Demetrah tells Maybell "Ok Maybell. sounds good." A few hours later, Maybell and Demetrah have all their belongings settled into the hotel room. "Ok. now that we're settled in and everything, would you like to go swimming Demetrah?" Maybell asks Demetrah. Jumping for joy, Demetrah says "Yes." At the pool, Maybell sets her friend's cane by the wall. The pool was a huge pool. It was a lot of room to swim. Since Maybell and Demetrah were only 6'8, they decided to stay on the safe side. They swam for 2 hours, but then they went back to their room. The hotel clerk Maybell talked to earlier was off for the night, but other workers were on duty. Back in the hotel room, Demetrah was curious about what the hotel clerk that helped them look like. Maybell taps her fingers and tells Demetrah "well, she had light blue hair. She was 5'3 and she was wearing a sunny outfit. She had a Days Inn hat, and she had a velvet voice." Demetrah was excited about what her best friend said. "Maybe we should send her a thank you note for helping us. When we find an apartment, we can do that." with a smile and a soft voice, Maybell replies "Of course we will Demetrah." After their conversation, Maybell and Demetrah came up with nicknames for themselves. "Hey Maybell, I will call you May. It's your nickname." Starting to write her new nickname on a label, Maybell tells Demetrah "your nickname I give you is Demi. I know you don't have an I in your name, but that's ok. It's close." Demetrah pulls out her braille note, and she begins to braille write her new nickname. "Sounds good." they said at once. The room fell silent, but then Maybell's Skype starts going off. It was a Skype call from her aunt Madison. Maybell accepts her Aunt's video call. Madison had blonde hair with black highlights. She was wearing a beautiful glittery blouse. "Hey Aunt Maddie. We've made it all the way up to West Fargo." Maybell tells her Aunt. "I am so happy that you and your best friend made it up there safely. How is your friend doing?" Madison asks Maybell with a smile. "Well, she's fine. However, we did have an incident on the way up here. I missed a turn, and we crashed into a pole. Demetrah lost the rest of her sight, but I'm here to help her." Maybell explains with a sigh. Disappointed, Madison sighs and says "As long as you stay with her at a times. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's loss of vision." Maybell begins to say yeah, but then she was interrupted by her Aunt's oven going off. "what are you making Aunt Madison?" Maybell asks. With Madison's computer on the table, Madison takes 2 pans of cookies out of the oven. She puts 2 more in. "I am making peanut butter blossoms. I will send you some if you'd like me to." Madison says as she returns to the computer. Maybell accepts the offer, and gives the hotel address to her Aunt. "Ok. I will send you some for a snack. Listen sweetie, I'll have to catch you later. ok?" Maybell nods and says ok. Getting done with the call, both Demetrah and Maybell hug joyfully and say "Yay! we get to have some peanut butter blossoms." As the sun sets, Maybell exclaims "We better get to bed. it's getting late." Agreeing to the suggestion, Maybell guides Demetrah to her bed. Once Demetrah is all tucked up in her bed, Maybel starts getting to her bed.  After the girls say goodnight, Maybell turns off the light. The room fals silent until the next morning.
