Chasing your Shadow

I spent so much time chasing your shadow

but he wouldn’t tell me your name

he wouldn’t show me your face

I spend my days thinking of what would have been

what could have been

what should have been

but wasn’t meant to be

I still feel your fingers wrapped around the heart of me

All I could do was chase your shadow

I followed you all over this town

I ran through the mountains 

and the forest 

and all around

Do you just not want to be found?

I can’t be me without you

I’ll have to be someone else

I’ll throw away my hair and cut off my clothes

I’ll be a me that you don’t recognize

an I that I don’t know

I chased your shadow ‘till my legs broke in two

I fell flat on my face

but I still could not fall into you

Even frozen still

my thoughts were all of you

But I can’t do this anymore

my heart and soul are ill

I promise I won’t think of an other

I’ll just think of me

When you decide you’re ready

I hope that you’ll know where I’ll be

You’re the only one whose shadow shrinks with the setting sun

it won’t devour me like I want it to

All you do is run

I planned my future with you

but it never came to be

So I’ll picture myself alone

in hopes that future too I’ll never see

If fate doesn’t want me happy

or to give me what I need

Then I’ll scream out that I don’t want you

So maybe one day we will be

Author's Note

This poem is unrelated to any of my other works, and was written on a complete whim. I just wrote the words that came into my head in one draft, so I apologize that the rhyming isn't done better. I hardly ever attempt to write poetry, so this is very rare for me, I just had some thoughts about a person that I wanted to pin down. This wasn't inspired by anything else, so if it sounds like another poem/song/story, I assure you that is not the case.

For a person who rarely writes poetry, this is, quite frankly, amazing. I love the rhyme as it is, the set out of the lines, the very powerful imagery you create of chasing someone's shadow.

It mainly screams a person's need and desire for the one he/she loves, but it also leaves a person confused as to who or what the narrator's talking about. It's very good, though.

but it is very creative in layout and quite fun to read
