Masquerade of Hope

Masquerade of Hope

A Poem by Against All Authority
"

Symbol of hope is merely a symbol of illusion.

"
Flame has long since perished,
but a mere ember in the night,
withering and pulsing
until it has disappeared from sight.

Arm once raised in defiance
to tyrants and to kings,
now hangs limply and anemic,
a pitiful, somber scene.

Piercing, fiery eyes
once brilliantly aglow with hope,
now are dead and barren,
a listless soul afloat.

Cracks barely visible,
now erode alarmingly fast,
the stout concrete base
is now but a figment of the past.

It crumbles shamelessly
down to a pile of rubble,
justice, equality, liberty,
are on the run in trouble.

Caught and arrested
and thrown in an airless cell,
the land of the free
is now a land of living hell.
