More On A Leaf

More On A Leaf

A Poem by Nicole Roush

A display of warmth and blush would once make its way down the tree.

Gracefully it left, like a final bow at the end of a play; so frail, yet, quite tender to the eyes of the admiring audience.

Mornings pass dressed in suites and ties, carrying a briefcase of winter clouds.

Mucky leaves now slop their way around, hitching a ride on the nearest boot or swift ambulance.

Still, some stay close to home; never gliding too far past its trunk.

They watch lovely arms that once held them tight.

Rest and sway... a mother rocking her empty cradle

It was fall, and the colors of the leaves were fellowshipping down as in the the Aspen forest nearby. Like the morning of a thousand peoples at a funeral, yet they carried their briefcases passing by to work, for they had not time to smell the roses as they were pressed for time. Though the funeral were over, some were still proving their humorousness for hugging trees. Why are you saddend leaves? Do not be weary for those who are now in a better place. Soon you will see them in heaven again my child. (Mark 8:24) (Isaiah 55:12) (Hebrews 12:1)

Whoa. < this is all that initially comes to mind at the end of this poem.

This is lovely. I love your imagery and diction. "carrying a briefcase of winter clouds" paints such a vivid and unique picture, so much so I can feel winter blowing in. I can see autumn in its glory. You've brought me back to memories I don't normally consider, memories of playing in leaves and memories of family. I love how you use 'slop'. It's perfect for what you mean and conveys the sound incredibly well.

But, by far, the most beautiful line is the last, when it all comes together, and takes on new meaning, a meaning not seen until the last detail. Amazingly written.
