The Gulmohar tree in my Backyard

The Gulmohar tree in my Backyard

A Poem by Nive
"

For the little girl in me who never grew up...

"

My childhood memories start with the Gulmohar tree in my backyard..

The bright red flowers with green plump leaves aginst a backdrop bright blue sky..

Its staying so vivid in my mind, and i can't remember anything older than that..

It always had me drifting off to a faraway world..

One which is not real, but so intense and mystic..

The flowers swayed lightly with the sea breeze..

Spreading the coolness in the scorching hot afternoons..

I knew the falling old leaves are sad..

They parchuted down slowly, hesitant to meet the earth..

I could see a whole new world opening before me..

The flowers, leaves, sky everything starts becoming the characters of my granma's stories..

A euphoric show unfolding before my eyes..

They became the kamsa, Krishna and keechaka..

All playing their part with majestic grandeur..

Nothing could beat a kid's visions

My mom always found it difficult to get me inside

She never realised the bond

Today, 23 years later...

I still find myself standing awestruck at the grandeur of the Gulmohar tree

It was a bond that was to last forever..

someone rightly called it 'The Flames of Fire'

For i could see the fire, whenever i looked at it...
