Lily Bower: Chapter 1

Lily is stuck in a huge party thrown by her rich and distant parents.

LILY

 

I look sideways at Rachel.

 

“Holloway,” she mouths.

 

Turning back to the sharply dressed young man, I smile and greet him. He makes some insincere compliment, and Rachel and I share a look. We leave him quickly and decide to sit down under the huge staircase.

 

I’ve already had my fill of the party, and the tortuous shoes Rachel had shoved onto my feet are killing me.

 

Rachel rolls her eyes at my dramatic complaints and stands up. “You stay here, then. I’m going to go dance with some cute, stuck up, rich boys,” she declares.

 

I sigh and pull at my elaborate, itchy gown. After a moment, I look down and realize I’ve been tugging at a quickly unraveling string. Is it supposed to come out? I settle my hands and look at the dancing. Why can’t I enjoy this?

 

My eye catches Mother’s, and I remember why.

 

I sulk for another few minutes before forcing myself up for a drink. I resolve to actually try to have fun at this stuffy occasion. Just this once.
