you did all you could for him."

I look at the ground in secret shame
Catching only glimpses of her yellowed shirt
Wrinkled hands that were ere clasped humbly.

I wish I could look her in the eye
And say
The things I knew were in his heart.

Words only lovers get to say....

"I'm sure he's up there watching us all-
Having a laughter fit."

She sighs away wistfully.

I look past her
At the darkening swirling sky.
That looks ready to cry.

"I'm sure he'll want you to be happy."

"That child wants everyone to be happy. Lord knows."

She smiles against age and Sadness.

"Just concentrate on getting better. That's what he would have wanted."

If I were to tell the truth
I'd say he wanted --
