CHAPTER ONE

The month early neon moving Santa signs in shop windows, did not quite fit in with the dry, hot dusty Texas weather of Middlestad; the most remote town this side of Austin, surrounded by forest, desert and a far off glittering view of a city.

I was absentmindedly walked down the dusty, hot street take the occasional glance in a shop window, wishing for a winter snow that we would never have.

Suddenly the ear piece in my right ear covered by my long hair, buzzed and crackled in my ear

“Teresa, stop looking for my Christmas present! You’re on a job” my team member and werewolf friend, Jake joked. Since the werewolves had come out of hiding our boss, Anna, had decided it would be good protection to have at least one werewolf in each team. She was much less enthusiastic about vampires though; given their reputation that many of them felt obliged to live up to.

“I’m not shopping, and who said I’m getting you a gift at all? Anyway I’m only trying to look like an innocent weak bystander which, if you remember, is what I’m supposed to be” I answered with false sweetness.

“Sure you were. Anyway heads up, Anna says he just walked past the pizza shop and is heading your way” Jake laughed before the ear piece went quiet again.

I shook my head at jakes idea of humour and carried on walking. They were here to take down one of the strangest but cleverest serial rapists Middlestad had ever known. A man who liked to call himself 'Big Daddy' in all his you-can’t-catch-me notes to the police department. Of course he never would have expected these letters to be his un-doing.

I (because of a lack of women in our department) was there to act as bait for the rapist, dressed as a young college girl in shorts and a small shirt complete with a bag of books. I should probably feel scared or nervous. Instead I was feeling urge for revenge for the young women this man had abused and broken.

There was a crowd of people around the TV shop window watching the weather channel. I walked towards them. I knew he was there. I could smell him. I had already gotten his scent off a scrap of shirt one of the girls had torn off him in a struggle. I made my way through the transfixed crowed towards the owner of the scent. I wasn't shocked to find the man I eventually stood beside was a balding, thin man in his mid-thirty’s who had more hair on his eyebrows than he had probably ever had on his head.

I stood next to him and watched the weather. I joined in ecclesiastically when the crowd cheered after the weather man finally announced the cold should be arriving on Monday.

“Finally” I said breathlessly, taking my chance at starting a conversation” an end to this god damn sun!”

“Yes, it is good new isn't it” the man answered mildly, he was staring at the group of giggling girls who had just walked past.

“Hi, my names Teresa Collins I go to the college here” I said in an attempt to grab his attention away from the girls.

It worked.

“Hello Teresa, my names James large. I work in a convenience store.” he said looking me up and down a creepy smile growing on his creepy face.

“Nice to meet you”

“Nice to meet you too. Would you like to go get some coffee with me Teresa?” he asked flashing me a smile.

I flashed him my best smile and casually put one hand in my pocket, checking my hand gun was still in my hip holster. Luckily for me, and unluckily for him, it was.

“Sure, why not” I said carelessly

Then my ear piece buzzed with high pitched static that made me wince slightly “be careful Tess” a voice I vaguely knew as Anna’s warned.

James large took my arm and threaded it through his then led me down the streets.

We walked for at least half an hour. I was beginning to be thankful he wasn't a vampire or one of the moon called or else he would be able to smell my fear and hear my heart beat quicken with every slow step we took and the anticipation brewed inside my stomach as I noticed the sun getting lower and lower in the sky.

“I don't remember there being a coffee place down here” I noted innocently.

He had brought us to the rough part of town. The part where we often investigated for domestic disturbances calls and mugging. A nightmare place where no one helps you, even if you scream.

Silently he lead me by the by the arm down a dark alleyway. “That” he said “is because there isn't one” and he yanked my arm so hard I swung round to stand in front of him.

“What do you mean?” I asked arranging my face into one that showed fear before I looked up at him. I am totally going to nag Anna for a reward for this acting. No paper work for the next month sounds good.

He looked at my face, hopefully seeing my pretend fear, and laughed a cold laugh.

I yanked my arm away from him and began to back up to a distance were I could pull out my gun before he attacked me. But my back hit a wall behind me to even five feet away from him.Crap. How the hell did I let myself get cornered? And by a human no less. In my head I could almost hear jakes answer to my question, “because you never listen to Charles and always do your own thing”.

James large closed the space between us in a mere two steps and put one of his hands on my hip.

“If you’re a good girl I won’t kill you” he whispered into my ear.

Then before I could stop him he reached up and casually brushed back my hair, revealing my ear piece.

“Oh cra-” he started sharply but I cut him off with a quick knee in his crotch.

As he lay on the ground gasping I moved away from the wall and pulled out my gun.

“You’ll stay on the ground if you know what’s good for you” I growled, a real animal growl but not quite like a wolf's.

I pressed a button on the ear piece “OK team we got him, “big daddy” is whimpering on the floor at my feet. Did you guys record our...conversation?”

“Yeah, Tess we got him. Well done. Were just round the corner being there in five” Jake answered and I could hear the triumph in his voice.
