Requiem of a Dream

Requiem of a Dream

A Poem by Alice Walker

Sweet lullabies from my dreams
Ring gently in my ears as I danced.
I had no true partner in my waltz
But to me, my shadow was dancing along.

Sunlight caressed my skin with a loving touch,
Reminding me of the purest silk I had ever felt.
The Sun sewed me a dress of her golden threads
While the Moon bestowed a circlet of his silvery beams.

I spun and laughed freely,
My shadow leading me in a fast dance.
I had longed for a chance to feel this joyful and care free,
And this was as free as I have ever felt.

Soon the sounds of reality seeped in,
My alarm clock letting out its maddening beeps.
I opened my eyes to the depressing darkness of my room
And sighed sadly as I burrowed under my warm blankets.

I longed to be released back into my dreams,
Where I always was welcomed and treated with friendship.
But that was just it though-
They were only in my dreams and not my reality.

Reality seems to grow darker to me
As the sweet lullabies still echoed in my ears.
The cars and birds outside dispel the songs though,
While I release a chorus of sighs-

The requiem of a dreamer's dream.

Ha that is me every morning. There is something romantic and comforting about the dreamworld isn't there? The place where you can really be you.

Okay, you do that.
Beautiful imagery, I love your representation of the sun as female and the moon as male - popular media has it inverted, and it brings a fresh wind to your poem. Very interesting!
