Standing

Standing

A Poem by Schaquistia Clark

Standing

Looking out into the darkness ones heart would normally flutter….

Not mine, it stares into the darkness and not even my soul gives a shutter…

The yawning mouth of life uncertain…

As a soft breath leaves the my lips like a billowing curtain…

Another drag off of a cigarette…

Another day to forget….

Standing here on the edge that once struck fear into my heart…

Now is just a gaping void mirroring my heart…

One stress upon my plate descends…

Another issue I must defend…

Standing her alone even though many stand at my side….

They cannot see what I see when I look outside…

Putting out the embers of my cigarette…

I turn to look at a night I am destined to forget…

Friends gathered as family with the trust we stand unitedly…

But, I am proof that when the mighty fall we fall silently..

Ascending into that ever growing void of eternity.
