The Bone of Contention...

The Bone of Contention...

A Story by Nicky Sarti
"

Something daft & different from me... Written partly in "dog speak" ~ they have a bone, both want it; neither want to let it go... Does it have hidden meaning? Maybe... what do you think?

"

“Grrr... woof woof woof...” The older dog barks and demands the bone.

Snarling the younger dog will not give in; “Grrrr... woof woof...” He’s not going to be told what to do by some old mangy dog, he did find it after all.

The older dog doesn’t care, he demands the bone; “Woof woof woof, grrrr...”

“Yap yap yap, pant pant; woof...” The younger dog cannot understand why the older wants this bone. He has loads of other things, why this and why now.

The older dog turns the question back on itself, “woof woof woof...” Why does the young dog need it so badly anyways.

“Grrrr... woof woof woof woof woof...” He wants that bone, and he doesn’t care how the old dog tried; he’s going to keep it.

Older dog has had more than his fair share of bones anyway, he doesn’t need this one; “Woof woof woof, grrr grrr; yap yap...”

“GRRRRRRRRRRR....” He’d better watch his manners, the older dog isn’t about to take that kinda talk from just any old young whipper snapper!

“Yap yap yap, woof woof woof...” The younger dog had always treated him with respect, it wasn’t like he was some pitbull or something!

“Woof... yap...” He is respectful of the younger dog, but will not let go of HIS bone...

“pant pant pant...” Snarling the older dog wants this bone, the younger dog will not let it go; neither are backing down...

“Grrr...” Both growl, neither willing to back down.

Now what? Neither were backing down; both were standing their ground... a fight would undoubtedly take place, but neither wanted to be the first one to make that move.

The older dog knew he was unlikely to win the fight, the younger dog did not want to be the one to make the first move; both just stay where there were.

Growling and snarling at each other, wanting the bone; but neither willing to give up the bone.

Who makes the first move, who wins this fight is up to you; you have the Bone of Contention...

Nice one nicky - I saw this as a childrens book - and kids loving it! As I read it I could see the illustrations already. You should do more like this! You obviously have a talent for this genre. Well done! It's as good if not better than a lot of kids books I have had to read. Seriously, I think you should explore this side of your writing more!

Hi Nicky, I too like this as it is somewhat original but would suggest it could do with some crafting to polish it up a bit.

Thanks John...
It shall go on my "polish up" pile!
I agree with Allan, a kid's book all the way. It's a theme that children will all experience during their early years. I can foresee a plot from the younger dogs perspective and his plans to steal the bone. Loved it :)

Thanks Alan, much appreciated.
Well, as I recall, I jokingly told an abbreviated version of this at our last meeting, over which some of us laughed quite a lot. Nice to see it in print.
