The Invitation

The Invitation

A Chapter by Nicolerhi

Out of breath, I come barreling in to the classroom, hoping to not be late.
*RING* *RING*
The bell rings just a minute too soon. I can see the sensei mark a little slip of paper with a flourish, a satisfied grin upon his face. "Caroline-san," he starts as I walk over to his desk, "care to explain your tardiness?"

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Jabir sit down and Yuri sits down in the seat next to him. The one assigned to me. She places her bag at her side, and pulls out a floral notebook. The sensei clears his throat loudly, "Caroline-san?"
"Oh, um, I-" I start, but he puts his hand up to silence me, "No excuses, Caroline-san; this is your second time being late."
"I'm sorry, I just lost track of time," I rack my mind for any discernable excuse, "I was only a mere a second late; should that even count?"
The sensei taps his fingers impatiently on his desk. "Rules are rules," he slides the slip of paper towards me, "you have a detention afterschool, in class  001."
"Yes, sir." I say unwillingly as a grudgingly take the note. I walk back to the seat directly in front of Jabir and sit down.

Just as I slip into my chair, the sensei clears his throat to speak, "Before I begin class, I've been told of two announcements I must make. First is to assure everyone in my class that everything is okay and taken care of regarding the body found here; there is no need to worry, the school board has everything taken care of." the sensei lets out an exasperated sigh, "And second, the headmaster of this school is throwing a birthday party for his daughter, and he has insisted that every student and faculty who attends Rose Prep, must go. It's tomorrow...Ugh..." A boy in the front row shoots his hand up, "Yes, Shin?" the sensei groans as he passes out the invitations.
"Actually, it's the headmaster's son: Remy Edward Prince," Shin pushes his glasses up onto his nose, "he's turning fourteen, and he's going to start attending here. He's returning home from studying with his mother, Lila Prince, in Peru."
The sensei looks annoyed, "Yes, of course," he crosses his arms over his chest, "does anyone else have any comments?" A red-haired boy named Hikaru chuckled to himself, "I'm sorry Sensei, but I'll have to pass on the lame-o party; my family's going out of town."
His sister, Hina genuinely looks confused, "But, we're not going anywhere! Only Mom and Dad are--" Hikaru covers Hina's mouth with his hand, "We're not going to be able to --HEY!!"
"Don't ever put your hand over my mouth, Hikaru!" Hina stands from her chair and runs out of the classroom, clearly upset. The entire class stares at Hikaru, "She bit me!" he looks around at us, "oh, alright." Hikaru takes his and Hina's stuff and runs out of the classroom.

"Wait, don't--" the sensei stops mid-sentence and then goes to his desk to sit down, defeated, "why do I even teach anymore?" he mutters to himself.

The class time passes rather uneventfully.
