Large White BirdA Poem by Nicolerhi
As the blue jay sings, my heart beats faster as though it would burst out of my skin.
Tweet. Tweet. Tweet. Perched upon the branch, staring at me attacked by midnight black birds. Tweet. Tweet. Tweet. The midnight birds have talons as knives, I figure, as they dig deeper into my body, under my skin, letting the blood seep out onto the ground. Tweet. Tweet. Tweet. Blood on feathers, a smile seemingly placed at their beaks. Relishing in the dark red, the deep scars. Tweet. Tweet. Tweet. And one turned to me, with its malicious grin, and spoke, "cause your different, and you don't matter -- nor does anything you say -- So, you should shut your mouth and not say a thing." Tweet. Tweet. Tweet. "And stop oppressing me, you meanie mean!!" another one chirped, leaping to my throat, shoving her talons in my neck. I had not seen her around, had not oppressed, yet the talon-knives were in my side, and that fact no longer seemed to matter. Tweet. Tweet. TWEET. The blue jay grew louder, and flapped its wings in a panic. The black birds were put on alert. TWEET. TWEET. TWEET. the bird continued and the others joined TWEET in TWEET frightened, my eyes darted around TWEET nothing TWEET wait TWEET TWEET the ground shook. the birds all flapped their wings rapidly. all panicked. all alarmed. TWEEEEEEEET a last yelp, before a large bird rose up from the ground, a beat of its wings, and the birds flew away. The large white bird landed beside me, and licked my wounds with its soft tongue. And, gradually, I began to heal. Bleeding ceased, scars and cuts closed, skin returned to a normal fleshy color. All the while, the bird pulled me into an embrace, Could I feel anymore safe?
