Dear Inspector, Why'd You Do it?A Poem by Nicole Renee
Watching the men in dreaded black take you away, I wonder what had made you push to the edge; To take it too far that the smoke had filled Your mind and lungs, taking your heart as A living, beating hostage with its vessels trying to Save you from the brink of what they would call a death. I know that saving the one you loved was what you had wanted, Burning her letter into the fire while you explained why you had done it. But I think that it’s more than just the power of love that drove You to the edge of death’s bony hand, cringing as you thought Of what would of have happened if you would of ran away And changed your full name without a trace of your very existence. I think that it was the memories of seeing into the future that Really spooked you out, drowning out the pictures by the taste Of that bittersweet drug, the smoke dancing around like And taking you into a world of fantasy and a better life. Yet I also wonder if it was the green liquid that Took a turn in stealing your heart away, The fire that spat upon the top of it Telling you that it would make your visions Come clearer, also taking you into its eye Of wishes and illusions that you secretly desired, Pouring onto your tongue like a cup of tea to a pair of lips. Now that I have concluded my thoughts and theories, I must go now to blend into this un-thoughtful crowd, Wondering if life would have been better If you would have taken that unbroken chapter In your hands and not another’s… Then everything would have been fine. © 2008 Nicole ReneeAuthor's Note
