Surrounded by Scattered ShadowsA Poem by Nicole LaszloThere was a cabin That once, was always lit Each room Each crack Each crevice Illuminated For in each room In each crack And in each crevice Light was placed Simply to illuminate That- One- Spot Now, this cabin Was surrounded by woods That never saw light That never saw the sun -Always engulfed in darkness Save for the cabin Figures stalked the lone light They did so constantly Lurking- Swiftly Speratically They swept by -Waiting I couldn't tell you When they entered There was no reason to know However- They stepped in without a sound Locking the door behind them Now- Slowly Methodically They traversed through- Each room Each crack And each crevice Turning out every light Extinguishing every flame All but a little old lamp Cracked and dim They tried to turn it off Pulling on its chain The light remained- Alone They unplugged it But the light remained- Alone Confused they surrounded it Contemplating their next move One finally knocked it down Down to the floor- merely by tapping it -Shattering its bulb Destroying the little old lamp But the filling- Still smoldering Ignited the rug in which it was thrust upon At first it was small; merely a flame But then it grew The figures tried to put it out But each attempt failed As the fire grew They tried to flee But they'd locked the door The fire engulfed them Leaving nothing but their shadows The cabin itself Was swallowed as well It spread into the woods In brilliant bright orange flames But burned only- The black sky The sun- Rose on the cabin that morning Which still stood well intact Except for the little old lamp That lay broken on the floor Surrounded by scattered shadows © 2017 Nicole LaszloReviews
