Chapter 2 (Elliot)A Chapter by Nicole Klein“Hey
Elliot, I call the bed by the window.” Brandon shouts. “No,
you got it freshman year so this year it’s mine!” I reply pushing past him with
the heavy boxes in my arms. Brandon unlocks the door to our new dorm room. He
reluctantly grabs the bed by our door and begins unpacking his boxes. It’s
nice to be back again after a summer break. Granted, Brandon and I see each
other every day because we became best
friends after our first year of college. He has become a brother to me. I know
he has a younger brother about 2 hours away but he doesn’t really mention him
much. I guess they aren’t that close; unlike me and my family. Although they
are all still in my hometown; New York, I try to talk to them as much as I can.
It’s been hard on them to have me move so far away to Virginia, but I had to do
what was best for me and my family. I got a scholarship that halved my tuition
to the University of Virginia, and I decided that because my family is
struggling financially I would make it as easy on them as I can. I am interrupted from my thoughts when Brandon
asks, “Hey we are going to try to round up some freshman for the party tonight
right?” I roll my eyes and nod my head yes. Brandon and I signed up to be
freshman aids, so I guess a good party would be a nice way to start out the new
year for some freshman. I
crush the final box an hour later and my part of the room is finally unpacked.
Brandon leaves the room forgetting to close the door. He walks down the hall to
talk to the guy two rooms down. I
sit on my bed and see a girl open the door across the hall. It looks like she’s
a sophomore like me, she closes the door behind her but leaves every once and a
while and comes back with a box or two. I start to feel creepy watching
everyone outside my dorm, so I get up to close the door when another girl walks
up to the dorm across the hall. She
has long blonde hair, but that’s all that I notice because her back is to me.
She walks into the room after a short pause before opening the door. After she
walks into the dorm room and closes the door, I break my focus on her and look
down the hall and I see Brandon and one of his friends tossing a football. “hey,
let’s start rounding up the freshman for the party, I’ll start on this end of
the hall you start down that way’ I say motioning his direction. © 2013 Nicole Klein |
