The stairs creaked underneath my scurrying feet. This was typical,
but today it sounded foreign even to my knowing ears. The sunrise barely leaked
through the windows; but it was there just enough to see the shadows. I grabbed
my wool coat off of the wooden rack carefully placed by the door. I pulled it
on my shivering body. The sense of security the coat gave me lasted for a brief
second, but left as soon as I
remembered. I remembered what I was about to do. The warmth left my body as
soon as it had come. Today was the day. I opened the front door and a dark
crisp wind came pouring at me; causing my hair to get as twisted as my stomach.
I took one brave step knowing what the
next couple of hours would hold. I closed the door behind me, quickly; knowing
if I didn’t do it now I never would. I took one more step, and then another. I
felt the crunch of the snow sticking to the bottom of my feet, adding to the
dread I already felt in my chest. But once I began I knew I could never look
back. Ever. And that was exactly how it all started.
