A Chapter by Nicole

Day had already broken when I opened my eyes. The stinging sensation from the sunlight through my window on my eyes, forcing me to wake up. Getting out of the bed, I walked gloomly past the stack of letters written to me, and into the bathroom. Baron said he had left his estate to him, everything he had left to Elise, now to him. Stepping into the shower, I thought to myself. I thought long and hard, what would have happened if he and Elise had run away, would she still be alive, would they have children. The beating of warm water hit at my back, and the scent of soap filled my nostrils. It hurt to think about all the letters she wrote, opening every single one to see the same message.

I sat at the table, with a plate of eggs and a cup of tea. The morning paper in front of me, but my eyes couldn't read what was there. Every word looked as if they were from Elise's letter, and my eyes kept wondering to the stack. Unable to take this any longer, I grabbed my coat and headed for the door. Outside my building I lit up and cigarette and peered across the street, to the alley way behind Bills Greenery Pub & Bar. My mind taking me on a trip back to the days of sneaking around and deciete.

Ragtime Cowboy Joe from Maurice Abrahams blasted in my ears. The scent of cigars and drunken men flooded my nose, but my sight focused on the beauty sitting across from me.

"Time for a good smoke boys. Are you coming Mathew?" Baron asked me, forcing my eyes away from Elise.

"No, I don't smoke." I laughed and sipped my brandy.

"Well you sit here and enjoy the talk of women." He walked off, leaving me with women who gossiped about nothing more than their men, and pleasure.  Retrieving a pen from my pocket, I wrote on a napkin:

Meet me in the alley way, in five minutes.

And slided it to Elise, watching her open it, I began to leave. The faint blush in her face made me smile, that lovely pink that brightened her face. I lit up a cigarette in the alley way, and listened to the talk of drunken men.

"I thought you don't smoke." I hear a feminine voice say behind me.

"I don't." Flicking my cigarette into the trash, I pulled her into my embrace. Her lips quickly finding mine, she tasted of lemons, and something else. Something sweet, that was her own unique taste. A brand of whiskey, that was his. He felt her moan into his mouth, and he moved to the nape of her neck. She smelled like honey, another moan escaped her lips as I nibbled at her silky skin. The feel of her hands anxiously raking at my back only arousing me more. Her grip tightening if she thought I would leave her embrace. We slowly started gravitating towards the wall, my lips moving to her ear. Sucking on the soft skin of her earlobe, the wall made it easy for her to feel my arousal print on my leg.

She started to reach  out to touch me, but I grabbed her hands before she could. Placing both her wrists in my grip, I pinned them above her head, and my lips found hers again. This time her kiss was demanding, a silent plea for more.

"We can't. Not here." I spoke into her mouth. The small wimper she made, had me going crazy. When the sound of drunken men faded away. I knew our blissful moment was over. Stepping back I traced my thumb over her lips, and brushed the stray strands of hair from her face behind her ear.

"Will I be able to see you tonight?" She asked me, fixing her dress.

"Yes, tonight. At the bridge." I replied, pulling her into me.

The sound of a car horn broke me out of my daze. Looking down at my cigarette I found that half of it had already burned away. Taking a drag, I started towards Baron's estate. By the time I had reached there, crates were being carried out of the mansion and packed into trucks. Inside was as empty as my heart. You could hear a small pin dropping on the ground.

"You came." I heard Baron say.
