I smiled at myself in the mirror, sheathing out my fangs. I slid my tongue over them, thinking about what I was going to do tonight. It was going to be difficult, but I had promised her. After all, it was her seventeenth birthday, and I was changed at seventeen…
* * *
Where is Crystal? I wondered to myself as I applied my make-up. I did not have a watch or clock with me in the bathroom and Crystal had promised to arrive at five thirty, so she could help me decorate for my party. Crystal was always on time, though. I mean when you’re a –
Clank. My eyeliner hit the sink. My arm had started shaking so much that I dropped my eyeliner as I was applying it. Crystal had warned me, but I insisted anyway. This is what I want the most, so I will get it. The problem was where and when, seeing as my parents were staying home for the party…
            Ding Dong.
“Mom, what time is it?” I called to my mother as the doorbell rang.
“It’s five thirty, Aly!” She called back.
It was Crystal. There was no doubt about it.
My mom opened the door and I heard Crystal’s voice float up to the bathroom. I did not hear, however, her footsteps coming up the stairs; nevertheless there she was, standing in the doorway of my bathroom. “Still applying that gunk to your face, Aly?” She smiled at me, her teeth shining in the light. She was teasing me again.
“Well, I have to look good for my party!” I cried.
“I always thought you looked good without the make-up. I mean, it’s okay when you use a bit of it, but you’re going overboard.” She was fiddling around with my many different make-up containers.
“Well I am not a flawless creature of the world…yet…”
She eyed me for a second. I thought I saw a flicker of doubt in her eyes. She quickly looked down and then continued to re-arrange and inspect my cosmetics. “So, I’m going to go decorate,” she said. I looked at her and took in her appearance yet again. She was beautiful, with short black hair that she had flipped outwards tonight, and eyes that were so dark they were almost black. She was only about five feet tall and had pale skin. She moved with ease and silence.
I knew she would do an excellent job with the decorations; she was so excited to help. So I said “Ok”, looked up, and she vanished.

The party went by so fast that night. Before I knew it, it was already 11:30pm and all of my guests had cleared out except for Crystal. My parents had gone up to bed, and Crystal’s father was picking her up at 12:30am.
We were just sitting in the living room, and I decided to speak up. “So in half an hour my birthday will be over.” I had the party on my actual birthday, and it was partly for this reason…
Crystal looked slightly uncomfortable. “Are you sure you want me to do this?” She whispered.
“Yes!” I cried. “I thought you wanted to do it for me, too…”
            “I do, it’s just…it’s really painful.”
“I can handle it, trust me.” I reassured her.
“And you can’t ever go back after.” She was being extra careful. I could see she didn’t want to make a mistake or ruin my life. “And what if…I can’t…stop.” I could barely hear her voice at this moment.
“I’m sure you will.” I assured her, though I was slightly shaking now.
“I haven’t…not human blood…for almost a hundred years.” She stuttered.
“You can do it. Do it, for me, please.” I put my hand on hers.
“Okay,” she said. “But, you know, you will find the right person for you. I am not the one. And if you become immortal, it might take a while before you do, and then you’ll have to deal with the emotional strain of not being able to be with me. Because, I do not like you, like that.” I nodded at what she said, confirming I’d be alright.
Crystal took a deep breath and moved in closer to me. I tried to inhale, but found that I couldn’t. She shocked me when she kissed me first. Her lips were cold and hard. I had imagined them to be soft, then again…The moment I realized she must have been attempting to distract me I felt a sharp pain in the side of my throat. I could feel Crystal’s fangs digging into me. I felt them come out as she pulled back and suddenly I was on the floor.
The pain was bewildering. Exactly that – I was bewildered. I couldn’t understand, couldn’t make sense of what was happening. My body tried to reject the pain, and I was sucked again and again into a blackness that cut out whole seconds or maybe even minutes of the agony. (Meyer 369) The pain was so intense that I could not even gather the energy to scream. I didn’t even know how much time had passed.
Just as suddenly as the pain had started, it ended. I got up, feeling cold. I searched for my pulse, there was none. I looked at Crystal, who was looking at me with horror in her eyes. A small drop of blood was on the corner of her mouth. The smell of it made my mouth water. At the realization, I forced myself to stay rooted to the spot. I was going to have to control myself, living in a city full of people. I was sure Crystal would help me.
I could see so much better, so much clearer. Crystal now looked ten times more brilliant, and it was much easier to see in the dark.
Crystal took a flashlight from my closet and turned it on, pointing it at me. I hissed and covered my eyes with my arm. She sheathed out her fangs and bared them at me; I followed suit. I was slightly astonished, and ran to the mirror in the hallway. There was my reflection - pale skin, fangs, and all. I was a vampire.
