To Search For a Home

A Poem by Nicolas Jao

We will never find a new home.

And now, I’ll never believe that

It is possible to explore the stars.

After decades of research, we now know

That’ll never be true

Because it’s wrong. The truth is,

Solving this problem is impossible

No one will believe

We stand a chance at surviving if Earth dies.

Those that think

We should support

These astronomers and physicists are fools.

It is our collective duty to ignore the people that think

This planet is worth saving.

There is so much wrong with the planet, but surely,

It’s all wrong, wrong, wrong! Let me tell you, this is the way:

Things like money, power, and fossil fuels?

They are what we should live for.

The collective dreams of a galactic civilization, by everyone,

Is complete and utter nonsense.

The myth that there is nobody that cares

Is, unfortunately, real, but

Climate change, garbage in our oceans, and war

Will destroy us before we can even care.

The problems of inaction, indifference, and inadequate funding

Are unfixable, and

The minds of those senseless imbeciles,

Space agencies of scientists and researchers? They should acknowledge that

They are problems that should just retire!

Because we are humans! And really,

Pollution, increasing rates of natural disasters, and other plagues? We can fight them

Only up to a certain point, and then?

They will consume us

The problems of the world are too harsh, but

I must say,

“I see no future for mankind.”

We will never think:

I truly believe we can save our species from ourselves.

All of it’s a total waste, because

Throwing in the towel, raising the white flag of surrender

Is how we will handle this complex issue.

Never giving up

Sounds like a cruel joke from a bygone era, because

That we must face an ever-growing Gordian knot of misfortune without result

Is something we should not attempt, and

We should not think our situation

Is good!

I mean, to think that

We’ll have the audacity to explore the heavens!

Because in the end,

Mankind’s hubris

It’s what will destroy us. What will save us is

Earth’s doom.

All that we must do to prevent

Working on these interstellar projects! It’s

Wasting our money and resources

In the future if Earth gets destroyed, no one will think we’re

Still full of hope.

There are no planets for us out there, but I am

Sure so far, we have found

Nothing.

When we don’t find

A suitable planet

Everyone will be so full of life from

Our rockets, and

It will blast away, like

The hope that we have.

We must believe

All of this will happen.

Unless we turn things around like the path of a boomerang,

Everything is hopeless.

We must condemn those who think

We must have faith in the future.
