A Bond

As a smile graced his face

for the first time

a single tear slid down hers.

A mother and child,

together, happy and complete.

She gives him a kiss

and he opens his mouth

as if to pledge a promise

to listen, and love

to protect her as she raises him.

The two of them together

able to overcome it all

because of the love they share

that will never falter,

never fail or leave them,

a bond unbroken, even by death.
