A Real Toy

A Real Toy

A Story by Nick

I walked in and found the bench, looked very used to me. Orientation day. The boss starred me down as if I was a dinner plate on Thanksgiving. I looked to my left and a passing secretary rolled her eyes at me. I stopped her and asked for some advice, I was pretty nervous. “Make sure he likes you. If he doesn’t, he’ll remove you as quickly as you start here”. She scurried away from me as if I had done something wrong. He walked up to me. “Follow me, I will show you to your desk. Did you just meet Janice?” I nodded and said, “She seems like a nice person.” “Well, don’t screw up like she did.”

I sat down where he told me to, contemplating what this job really was. Everyone stared me down. I was beginning to feel like the outcast that no one wanted. The desk was covered with dust, cobwebs, and a nameplate that read “Janice King”. I began to clean off my desk and he walked over to me, snapped the nameplate in half, threw it in the trash, and dropped a stack of paperwork in front of me " spraying the dust all over the place. “Fill this out, and be quick about it! There’s a lot to do around here and it’s gunna be a long first day.” He walked away from me, heading towards his executive office behind closed doors.

Author's Note

Nick
This piece was a thought that came about from a friend who was singing "A Secretary Is Not A Toy" from "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Might be sworth developing the manager's character.
