![]() Pints, bars, the latesA Story by Charles J. Carmody![]() Simple kindness![]() Tease Mawray " Proud she was - in a dream it was I told her, ye better stop it right now, I’m in me lates and I’ve no time for ye. She said, don’t know what you mean, stop what? See, now there you go again; I’m twice your age now, if you keep it up your going to make me start feeling good about me self, feeling I’m something special, and at this late date, God knows I’m not, so stop it now I tell you. She smiled and took another sip of her pint. So here’s what I’m going to say for the last time, you take your flowery dress, your freckles, your dimples, your perfect smile, all the way down to the other end of the bar; it’s almost ten you know, it’s almost time for the plant to let out, and all the young handsome fellas will be coming in for their after shift pints. It’s at that end of the bar a pretty lass like you needs to be waiting, not at this end where us old timers are sitting like crows on a fence, money already spent. She looked my way and smiled again, her perfume tickling my nose, slowly picked up her pint, got off the stool, turned one last time, and said; so, we going out them swinging doors together to get the wives talking, or am I going out first with you following behind so as to not cause a stir? With that, and everyone listening and watching, she put her soft hand under my arm, and still smiling, standing proud she was, my new wife and I walked out the doors to the sound of “cheers to us all” from me mates; proud she was as the cool evening air hit our cheeks, and the shift bell rang somewhere off in the distance. Proud she was to be walking down the street with a bit of history, a gentleman’s hand, and the love of her life, proud she was I tell you, proud she was. Cheers. © 2025 Charles J.
