I take the nemesis to be death and indeed when that nemesis decides to become a foe, all breath vanishes. This poem is a celebration of being alive, of appreciating the air one can still breathe and subtly highlights the fickleness of life. It takes a moment to drop dead. From a living breathing human to a cadaver lifeless. Great thought and feeling evoked here. Kudos Neville1

Interesting word, nemesis. One definition is "a seemingly unbeatable rival." Well, the nemesis mentioned here definitely IS unbeatable. Do all you can to keep in that old boy's good graces.

Indeed, time is our self inflicted nemesis; both inexorable and inescapable, which is why of course we need to live every second of the ticking of our own personal clock.
As for our ending, the Big Bang theory has it that a very long time ago, our universe emerged from a single point of infinite density and gravity, and that prior to the event, space and time did not exist; which to my mind means the Big Bang itself happened at no place or time.
Thus my dear Neville, I am happy to confirm that compared to the much, much bigger picture of existence itself, the ticking of the clock is an irrelevance of our own making and that we as spirits of the Earth as actually immortal. :))
Beccy.

I can’t say I am particularly happy with a clock ticking , marking the minutes. I would rather not clock watch these days. As to your nemesis, surely you don’t have any arch rivals? Maybe you are referring to the dog days that can cast a shadow over the sunny side of yourself. Whatever, I see this poem in a good light. Hope your day today has been bright, happy and carefree Neville.
