Just One Last Shot

Just One Last Shot

A Poem by Neville

Just One Last Shot

Beneath the hopeful

ever hungry

and watchful eyes

of assorted gulls ..

He sat there feeding

crumbs to our

harbour sparrows ..

At least those

that bathed in the fine

red dust,

that settled between

his weary,

sandaled feet ..

While also, I might

just add ..

Casually working on

his winter tan ..

And reflecting long

and deep upon

every single one of

those he had once

either loved or lost ..

Now all gone though ..

And then ..

The terns came and then

they came again ..

Tiny diving,

jet propelled jewels ..

With bills filled

full of silver fish upon

their eventual rising ..

And his heart

did leap again ..

So he ordered another

medronho shot

before eventually retiring ..

Content and satisfied

that another day

had not yet been wasted ..

I loved the turn and terns in this poem. What appeared to be a reflection on loss did an about turn. The ending far more hopeful than the beginning. I felt that heart leap and another shot of medronho will see him sleeping peacefully and in better spirits in the morning. You know, it is the little things in life that give the greatest pleasure. I also like to ponder by the harbour. Beautiful poem Neville.

Hello Neville. You are writing my story now. My blood pressure went up and a Russian doctor. He told me. Two shots of whiskey will lower your blood pressure. Maybe I should get a Japanese doctor? Good afternoon from Michigan and thank you for sharing the entertaining poetry.

Thank you Neville.
I agree with Linda, there is an overwhelming sadness here, and it resonates with my heart. Those who he loved and lost, now are all gone. But the memories are tangible and live on. You write such wonderful, evocative pieces, Nev. I simply can't wait for that little baby to arrive!

bless ya Kelly .. and no neither can I 🐣🐥:)
There is some wonderfully evocative imagery in this poem Neville.

I could see it so clearly in my mind's eye. It was like sitting next to the old man; sort of just like I did with my grandpa, when as children he would take my sister and I fishing at Duston Mill. It was so peaceful and unspoilt then, but it has been three decades plus since we last visited, so like everything in this world I expect it has changed out of all recognition.

Never waste a day says it all; and thank you for the memory and trust you and yours are keeping well.

Hellos, Neville,
It sounds calming, but a little resounding of disappointment.
The bird he feeds, next to you, I find that romantic,
I like it when someone does something special for me,
I get the giggles, and just smile,
But the next lines, you sound disappointed,

There is a beautiful sadness to this. We find joy in the smallest things as we age, trying to find importance along the way. I feel this in my bones.

that'll do nicely, thank you.
I could hear the waves lapping and the gulls happily squawking as I read this. I felt a hint of sadness but a large dose of hope and to find the day un-wasted, at least as of right then...I liked that. Nicely done.

thank you kindly willweb, much appreciated sir :)
Do you know I only found out gulls were a protected species when I started carrying crossbow to Asda! Apparently they frown on that, the police, not the gulls, although they would if they try grabbing my cornetto again, greedy little bleeders! (The gulls not the cops)
I'd need a drink too after seeing those flippin' flapping' things in my face.
I wonder if they'll let me carry my sling and ball bearings, or is that against the law now too? Pfft!
Oh, it is against the law! Okay well.
Are land mines still illegal too? :-)

A day may not be full of great accomplishments yet small things can make it feel great. Stuff that we love and contentment in our own company. This was beautiful to read.
