Between Pauses

 

For maybe

a moment or two

perhaps ..

Somewhere

between pauses

and gasping

for breath like that ..

He thought

she might well

have died

there and then

right beside him ..

But whatever

the case,

may have then

been ..

He was sure

that her

heart skipped

a beat ..

And he loved her

much more

than he had loved

her before

and regardless ..

A death bed scene. Having been with my mum all night until a couple of hours before she died earlier this year, I relived it with this poem. Listening for the gasps and the skipping of heart beats. The pauses in between. So much love here Neville.

You know Neville I read this poem again this evening and see it with the passing of time in a completely different light. It was so close to my mum’s passing, I could only remember her erratic breathing on the last night of her life. However you read it, the unconditional love comes through. It is beautiful and also very sensual. Utterly lovely my friend.

I was hoping to pick out my favourite line but that was impossible as I love all your lines.
