An Unfinished Summer

An Unfinished Summer

A Poem by Neville

An Unfinished Summer

With the beard and in that certain light

he looked

a bit like Jesus Christ, or so she thought

he might ..

At least the way he looked when in the

movies

And she loved him like that throughout

summer

With his long hair, love beads, patched

jeans ..

those Marlboro lights and frayed velvet

jacket ..

Pray tell, what more might a girl from

up country want ..

As she savoured each moment till …

This poem made me think of the book 'Illusions' by Richard Bach about a reluctant messiah. Barnstormer not unlike your character. And I thought about our perception of Jesus based on ancient art. Then I contemplated on the character Jesus in the walking dead. Your poem made me think many things. I like it!

I have no doubt the fellow in this poem was indeed a handsome devil he may have looked like Jesus but after all, we all know that Neville rhymes with devil:) I was merely a glint in the 60s and a toddler in the 70s but I did wear flowers in my hair:)

Such a beautiful character description done through a poem. Really got a clear image of who this person was and the narrator's longing for him

ps. I hitch hiked up from Taos, NM back then to see my Grams who had a stroke .. I stopped at one of my Auntie's homes and my little cousin Annie (about 8 years old) took to me and we walked around the nearby park .. later she told me she thought I was Jesus ... oh my ... I still get such a kick out of that .. God bless you young man ... through the real guy Jesus :)))))))))))) love and peace

Seconds before reading this, I listened to Pete Townsend doing Dylan's "North Country girl", and it seemed to set the mood of love and wanting, though with genders switched. With summer and object of desire suddenly gone, one can only relish memories. Ah, but isn't that life? Very fine writing, my friend.

Great Neville. You've caught that brief spell perfectly when everything seemed possible but of course it didn't last.. Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember.
Take care,
Alan
