Tree of Souls

Tree of Souls

A Poem by Neville

Tree of Souls

While each

stout branch

of the tree of souls

casts

heavy shadows

all around

But oh’ so

very lightly …

Those self-same

swollen,

stricken limbs

dance blind ..

Clutching air

and raising

questions long

not asked …

But always asking

them politely

Who teaches

fledgling birds

to sing

and why do

starlings murmur

Who turns

the stars on each

night ..

and why do lovers

rarely

want to sleep

Yet babies

almost always

Choose to slumber …

The other day I was standing in a park next to a big maple tree overlooking the river and the breeze made the branches above my head started creaking and all of the sudden the cicadas started making their hiss calls and before you know it I was standing in a symphony of forest sounds as each tree chimed in their calls down the row and I thought to myself what were they saying to each other and now I know

Questions with answers that cannot, I think be verbalised. Inimitable, unique and splendid work my friend.

life will keep bringing questions, and I don't think we will answer all of them, why? because simply if You know everything You will lose the anticipation and enthusiasm of "living" and I believe even when You find quenched answers You will search for another question to remain the fire on :)

Interesting philosophical questions, Nev, to which I have no answers. I will say, though, concerning who teaches the baby birds to sing, the answer is not Sinatra, wherever he is. I have yet to hear a whippoorwill say, " Do be do be doo..."
