We poets are amongst the pinnacle of the futile my friend... yet we cant stand it we have to keep scrawling some sort of short circuit in our brains I think:/ at least those crumpled bits of paper will make for good fertilizer perhaps:) now take your nib tablets and get back to your indite (by the way your napoleon cap is crooked good sir)

I don't think anyone should be forgotten...no matter how mundane a life lead, that life had its effect
on someone...even if just one person...the life mattered.
As a poet, if I have moved one reader in my lifetime of writing...I feel something has been accomplished.

Yes Sir Neville my learned, world wise buddy, the human lifespan is but a minute blip on the cosmic calendar, and just like today's news is tomorrow's fish & chip paper, what is the point of worrying, ain't we all going the same way??
A poetic, prophetic, postulation my friend!!

.................. perfectly proposed Tom and magnificently appreciated ..
Perhaps, that one in a thousand or perhaps a million hits the jackpot of fame and recognition. The rest will fade into anonymity and buried in the sands of time. Countless born, countless gone, who knew where they all went? Well said dear sir!

Lots of writers want to be famous or at least well-known, maybe recognizable? But fame can be such a fickle identity, I don't want to go near it. I'm fine with being obscure. The fewer people who are privy to me & my life, the fewer people who will be trying to tell me how I should live it. I love the tone of your poem, level-headed & gently honest . . . plus I'm amazed at your variety of famous examples! Nice work! (((MUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I can imagine this conversation taking place over coffee. An interesting conversation about being forgotten. Perhaps it referred to the work place where the she here thinks the efforts made may be forgotten but were priceless in their goodness. The killer for me was the final stanza and the reference to lines of poetry, crumpled up discarded papers, scribbled and disjointed words being worthless. I feel sure that the poet who wrote them would have felt a little stab at that remark. Words are all a poet has. Worthless, never in a poet's heart. Discarded feelings here as well as words.
Now I'm considering what my legacy will be.
My children will remember me with love and admiration, my grandchildren too, assuming I have any. Which I hope I do otherwise my trail ends right there
