Wax Butterflies

Wax Butterflies

A Poem by Neville
"

............. if ever a love there was.. but beware of those Panama Hats :)

"

Wax Butterflies

I do still miss her you know

at least I do

occasionally ..

and always in a panama hat ..

No, not the one you gave her

but similar ..

and sitting, sipping water from

the same cracked stone jug ..

That’s how I often picture her

these days

and anyway ..

The last time .. the day was a

b***h ..  talk about hot ..

Even so, those old well-worn steps

were still cool

and kind of kind to the feet ..

Did I mention she

appeared to me, then to be

drowning and lost tho’ in my

oversized

and paint daubed shirt .. Yes

the one, that used to be mine

Tired as it was

and tied loose at the waist ..

Hey, dont you think she looked great

Yes I noticed the same buttons

were missing

and that look on her face,

the one that said

Yes, this is me and I’m free

Oh’ f**k .. for a moment or two

I almost forgot she was free ..

But hey ..

my imagination ran riot that day

and for all that I know

she may have just melted away

right there, before

these very blue eyes of mine ..

Much like that wax butterfly

she once took from the window

to protect

and keep out of the sun ..

As soon as I dared tho’ turn around

and look back,

They had both disappeared and were gone ...

A quality poem. If this was the one you were working on yesterday it's understandable why you penned only one. Something really touching about her wearing your old paint daubed shirt. I wore my Dad's dressing gown after he died so I could be as close to him as possible, smell his essence. Wearing another's clothes is very special in my book. The last day and then she was gone. Memories though live on and have a habit of resurfacing from the ocean:s floor when we least expect it. Wax butterflies, yes they need looking after too. Lovely poem Neville.

So I' ve come back for further reads and you have made alterations to the original stanzas, and text as well.

Reading it now, this reads like a conversation with another person about the girl in the Panama hat. This time I am thinking this must have been a close relationship and a separation followed. Maybe a death came later. There is just a hint there, but I can't be sure. Maybe she was a butterfly too who wanted to be free. In any case the she here has made a lasting impression over time. Sad ending to a love affair.

no...it isn't Neville .. not just words at all .. and your poem hits that mark with such sadness and underlying pain ..I think this is strong scene and character building ... i can see her and feel his heart .. well done .. don't we all just have one such as she .. or wished we did .. even if only to loose her ;) so poignant in that it seems he is talking to her new man ... both sharing what she gave to those who loved her ... she's passed on hasn't she Nev?! :(((((((((((((((( well done ... really like the stone jug .. the hot day and contrasting steps that are kind to the feet .. the same missing buttons .. the conversational style of yours drew me in ... its just a really fine genuine poem sir! thanks so much for sharing it.

the seat next to the cool cabinet has your name on Gene :)
So you noticed too that the paint daubed shirts have a habit of becoming theirs once worn. Leaving it to be one of two infuriating things.. One, that those you love just have a habit of making things better, or two... I forget what two was, but I think that may be part of their allure, making us forget anything and everything that isn't seen or felt in the now.
I was going to give at least six explanations of why this is so good Neville, but keep thinking of where those dabs of paint were daubed and can't think of anything else.

thank Bodhidharma I was not required to answer that question .. but good to hear 😀
Your words bring this scene to life, Neville. And that hat, the Panama hat. Not to be confused with a fedora, is the piece de resistance. A touch of unpretentious class. I can't quite make out if she is real or imagined. Too good to be true, but I suspect she exists for real.
